A Snapshot of Helsinki Anthropology in Interesting Times: Looking Forwards
Sarah Green was invited by the editorial team of Suomen antropologi to write something for their Jubilee Edition about Finnish anthropology, perhaps about her experience as an outsider, having worked in anthropology departments for a couple of decades in the UK before coming to Helsinki in 2012. She gladly agreed to write a piece, but argued that she would find it difficult to compare UK and Finnish anthropologies. As a specialist on borders, loc…
Nobody likes to sleep alone: Aspiring to kinship futures in post-Soviet Cuba
In post-Soviet Cuba, instead of the political future envisioned by Revolutionary authorities, poor residents of Havana aspire to create kinship futures where there is no need to 'sleep alone'. Here, the idea of 'sleeping together' represents a trustworthy social bond that shelters a person from loneliness over time. For thesehabaneros, sexual love between men and women cannot be trusted, since it is often plagued by suspicions of material interes…

These tendencies in current gender relations relate to the larger transformations in Cuba’s political and economic context. The fall of Eastern European and Soviet state socialisms seriously diminished the Cuban state’s ability to provide social services. Remittances generated through transnational kin ties and …

Gender, Kinship and Lifecycle Rituals in Cuba
This report discusses the efforts of state powers to inflict large-scale societal transformations on local gender and kinship by exploring the relationship between matrifocal gender and kinship structure and the socialist state in Cuba. Cuban gender and kinship relations are approached not only by examining the kinds of daily social interactions that took place amongst 'lower-class' Havanian informants, but also via the types of lifecycle rituals…
