  • Impact of unemployment variations on suicide mortality in Western European countries (2000–2010)

Moussa Laanani, Walid Ghosn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In their commentary, Vahid Shahidi et al 1 provide an interesting point of view on the results of our study entitled: “Impact of unemployment variations on suicide mortality in Western European countries (2000–2010)”.2 Nevertheless, their analysis reveals some misunderstanding of our paper. First, the authors explain that unemployment is endogenous to the economic crisis and, thus, trying to capture the effect of unemployment on suicide mortality…

  • Impact of unemployment variations on suicide mortality in Western European countries (2000–2010)

Moussa Laanani, Walid Ghosn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 27

BACKGROUND: A scientific debate is currently taking place on whether the 2008 economic crisis caused an increase in suicide rates. Our main objective was to assess the impact of unemployment rate on suicide rate in Western European countries between 2000 and 2010. We then tried to estimate the excess number of suicides attributable to the increase of unemployment during the 2008-2010 economic crisis. METHODS: The yearly suicide rates were modelle…

  • Estimating the number of homeless deaths in France, 2008–2010

Open Access•Cécile Vuillermoz, Albertine Aouba et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

In the absence of a register of the homeless deaths, the capture-recapture method provides an order of magnitude for evaluation of the resources that may be allocated by policy makers to manage the issue. Based on common and routinely produced databases, this estimate may therefore be used to monitor the mortality of the homeless population. Further studies about homeless mortality, particularly on the lead causes of deaths, are needed to manage …

  • Diverging trends in educational inequalities in cancer mortality between men and women in the 2000s in France

Open Access•Gwenn Menvielle, Grégoire Rey et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Although social inequalities in cancer mortality are still high among men, an encouraging trend is observed. Among women though, the situation regarding social inequalities is less favourable, mainly due to a health improvement limited to higher educated women. These inequalities may be expected to further increase in future years

  • Spatial interactions between urban areas and cause-specific mortality differentials in France

  • Using ‘amenable mortality’ as indicator of healthcare effectiveness in international comparisons

    J P Mackenbach, Rasmus Hoffmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 49

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: There is widespread consensus on the need for better indicators of the effectiveness of healthcare. We carried out an analysis of the validity of amenable mortality as an indicator of the effectiveness of healthcare, focusing on the potential use in routine surveillance systems of between-country variations in rates of mortality. We assessed whether the introduction of specific healthcare innovations coincided with decl…

  • Mortality differences between the foreign-born and locally-born population in France (2004-2007)

  • Using vital statistics to estimate the population-level impact of osteoporotic fractures on mortality based on death certificates, with an application to France (2000-2004)

Open Access•Nelly Ziadé, Éric Jougla et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

Osteoporotic fractures have a significant impact on overall population mortality

  • Ecological association between a deprivation index and mortality in France over the period 1997 – 2001

Open Access•Grégoire Rey, Éric Jougla et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

The deprivation index proposed reflects a major part of spatial socioeconomic heterogeneity, in a homogeneous manner over the whole country. The index may be routinely used by healthcare authorities to observe, analyse, and manage spatial health inequalities

  • Has the impact of heat waves on mortality changed in France since the European heat wave of summer 2003? A study of the 2006 heat wave

Anne Fouillet, Grégoire Rey et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2008

BACKGROUND: In July 2006, a lasting and severe heat wave occurred in Western Europe. Since the 2003 heat wave, several preventive measures and an alert system aiming at reducing the risks related to high temperatures have been set up in France by the health authorities and institutions. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of those measures, the observed excess mortality during the 2006 heat wave was compared to the expected excess mortality. M…

  • A predictive model relating daily fluctuations in summer temperatures and mortality rates

Open Access•Anne Fouillet, Grégoire Rey et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

Although France is a large country with geographic heterogeneity in both mortality and temperatures, a strong correlation between the daily fluctuations in mortality and the temperatures in summer on a national scale was observed. The model provided a satisfactory quantitative prediction of the daily mortality both for the days with usual temperatures and for the days during intense heat episodes. The results may contribute to enhancing the alert…

  • Heat Waves, Ordinary Temperature Fluctuations and Mortality in France since 1971

Open Access•Grégoire Rey, Anne Fouillet et al.•ARTICLE•Population (English Edition•2007•Cited by: 2

  • Patterns of mortality and their changes in France (1968–99)

    Joël Coste, E Bernardin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Background: Epidemiological transition theory is based on a succession of specific “patterns” of causes of death in human societies. However, the reality and consistency of patterns of causes of death in a population at a given moment has never been formally and statistically evaluated. Methods: Correlation analyses and principal component analysis were used to explore the correlation between age and sex cause-specific death rates and to identify…

Geographical Disparities of Aids Mortality in France. Geographical distribution of Aids mortality in France has been studied on the basis of the national cause-of-death statistics period 1983-1989. Aids mortality is very unequally distributed with two regions particularly affected (Paris region and paca) and, inside these regions, two areas which stand out with especially high death rates : the inner Paris and the department of Alpes-Maritimes. J P Mackenbach, M-H Bouvier-Colle et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1990

STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim of the study was to review published work reporting mortality from conditions amenable to medical intervention and compare the methods used and the results obtained. SOURCE MATERIAL--Two types of analysis were examined: (1) analyses of time trends, relating decline in mortality from amenable conditions to improvements in medical care (3 papers); (2) analyses of geographical variation, either between or within countries, i…
