Automated data analysis to rapidly derive and communicate ecological insights from satellite-tag data: A case study of reintroduced red kites
Analysis of satellite-telemetry data mostly occurs long after it has been collected, due to the time and effort needed to collate and interpret such material. Delayed reporting reduces the usefulness of such data for nature conservation where timely information about animal movements is required. To counter this problem, we present a novel approach which combines automated analysis of satellite-telemetry data with rapid communication of insights …
Mapping species distributions: A comparison of skilled naturalist and lay citizen science recording
To assess the ability of traditional biological recording schemes and lay citizen science approaches to gather data on species distributions and changes therein, we examined bumblebee records from the UK's national repository (National Biodiversity Network) and from BeeWatch. The two recording approaches revealed similar relative abundances of bumblebee species but different geographical distributions. For the widespread common carder (Bombus pas…
Cultural resilience: The production of rural community heritage, digital archives and the role of volunteers
The following paper addresses a lacuna in the literature relating to the concept of resilience. To date, cultural activity in relation to resilient communities has been given little attention and this paper will highlight how the lens of community heritage activities and the ‘bottom-up’ role of volunteer labour can act as a catalyst for building more resilient communities in rural areas. This develops from rural areas that have strong place ident…
E-Social Science and Evidence-Based Policy Assessment: Challenges and Solutions
The PolicyGrid project is exploring the role of Grid, Semantic Web, and Web 2.0 technologies to support e-Social Science, with particular emphasis on tools to facilitate evidence-based policy making. In this article, we discuss the challenges associated with construction of a provenance framework to support evidence-based policy assessment. We then discuss ourSpaces, a virtual research environment for e-Social Science that uses the Web 2.0 paradi…
Evaluating Centering for Information Ordering Using Corpora
In this article we discuss several metrics of coherence defined using centering theory and investigate the usefulness of such metrics for information ordering in automatic text generation. We estimate empirically which is the most promising metric and how useful this metric is using a general methodology applied on several corpora. Our main result is that the simplest metric (which relies exclusively on NOCB transitions) sets a robust baseline th…

Statistical Learning of Harmonic Movement
We explore the application of statistical techniques, borrowed from natural language processing, to music. A probabilistic method is used to capture and generalise from the local harmonic movement of a corpus of seventeenth-century dance music. The probabilistic grammars so generated are then used for experiments in generation (composition). The corpus
A Feature-Based Account of the Relations Signalled by Sentence and Clause Connectives
This paper describes a three-stage methodology for investigating the semantics and pragmatics of sentence and clause connective phrases. The first step in the methodology is to assemble a large corpus of connectives. The second step is to organize this corpus into a hierarchical taxonomy of synonyms and hyponyms, using a pre-theoretical substitution test. The final step, upon which we concentrate in this paper, is to impose a theoretical interpre…
Current Research in Natural Language Generation
Current Research in Natural Language Generation is derived from the Second European Natural Language Generation Workshop, which was held in Edinburgh in April 1989. The papers included in this volume were selected from revised versions of some of the papers presented at the workshop. The book provides a snapshot of the current research in NLG, with particular emphasis on the work conducted by the European research community. It is aimed at an aud…
