  • Corpus linguistics for leadership studies: Bridging the quantitative-qualitative divide

Open Access•Gerlinde Mautner, Andrea Whittle et al.•ARTICLE•The Leadership Quarterly•2026

Our aim in this paper is to add to the methodological toolbox of qualitative research in leadership by illustrating how corpus linguistics (CL) can be used to study large-scale datasets comprised of text or talk. CL differs from other approaches to analysing large-scale textual data, such as topic modeling and sentiment analysis, because it enables detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis of linguistic choices on the level of vocabulary and…

  • The rise of large language models: Challenges for Critical Discourse Studies

Open Access•M Gillings, Tobias Kohn et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Discourse Studies•2025•References: 42

Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT are opening up new areas of research and teaching potential across a variety of domains. The purpose of the present conceptual paper is to map this new terrain from the point of view of Critical Discourse Studies (CDS). We demonstrate that the usage of LLMs raises concerns that definitely fall within the remit of CDS; among them, power and inequality. After an initial explanation of LLMs, we focus on t…

  • Concordancing for Cads: Practical challenges and theoretical implications

Open Access•M Gillings, Gerlinde Mautner•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2023•Cited by: 5

Concordance analysis is widely recognised as one of the main techniques in a corpus linguist’s toolkit. However, despite a growing body of work critically exploring previously unquestioned mainstays of corpus methods ( Mautner, 2015 ; Taylor & Marchi, 2018 ), this has not focused on concordance analysis specifically. In this paper, we aim to discuss issues that researchers may encounter when interpreting concordances. We begin in Step One with a …

  • Language, space and the law: A study of directive signs

    Gerlinde Mautner•ARTICLE•International Journal of Speech…•2012

This paper contributes to the study of linguistic landscapes by analysing warning and prohibition signs in urban settings. On the basis of data collected in British cities, it explains how directive signs reflect the interplay of language, law, space and society. Primarily conceptual in orientation but with a strong empirical base, the paper explores how the performativity of directive signs is constituted, on the one hand, by where they are plac…

  • Mining large corpora for social information: The case of elderly

    Open Access•Gerlinde Mautner•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2007•Cited by: 12•References: 28

Using a large, computerized corpus, this study aims to provide lexico-grammatical evidence of stereotypical constructions of age and aging. It focuses on elderly, a word that is pivotal to the domain in question and whose associative meaning is contested. The collocational profile drawn up on the basis of corpus evidence shows that elderly is primarily associated with discourses of care, disability, and vulnerability, emerging less as a marker of…

  • The Entrepreneurial University: A discursive profile of a higher education buzzword

    Gerlinde Mautner•ARTICLE•Critical Discourse Studies•2005•Cited by: 22•References: 11

The growing orientation of public universities towards the corporate sector has had a sign ficant impact on higher education governance, management, and discourse. The rhetoric of the free market, man fested most tangibly in business-related lexis, is now firmly established in the discursive repertoire employed by academic leaders, politicians, and the media, as well as parts of higher education research. Within this rhetoric, enterprise and ente…

  • Time to get wired: Using web-based corpora in critical discourse analysis

    Open Access•Gerlinde Mautner•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2005•Cited by: 48•References: 22

Although the world wide web has become a popular object of and tool for different kinds of semiotic and linguistic investigation, critical discourse analysis (CDA) does not seem to share this enthusiasm in equal measure. The contemporary relevance of the web as a key site for the articulation of social issues should make it a prime target for critical discourse analysts with a political and emancipatory brief. Nonetheless, CDA publications are st…
