  • Nubian Verb Extensions and Some Nyima Correspondences

    Open Access•Angelika Jakobi•ARTICLE•Dotawo A Journal of Nubian Studies•2021•References: 1

Having a historical-comparative approach this paper is concerned with the reconstruction of some Proto-Nubian derivational morphemes comprising two causatives, two applicatives, and two suffixes deriving verbal plural stems, as well as a now defunct causative prefix. When discussing applicatives in the Nile Nubian languages, it is argued that they involve converbs, i.e., dependent verbs, which in Old Nubian and Nobiin are marked by the suffix -a.…

  • Heterosemy of case markers and clause-linkers in Andaandi (Nile Nubian)

    Open Access•Angelika Jakobi, El-Guzuuli et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in African Linguistics•2016•Cited by: 1

Case markers are usually associated with nouns or noun phrases but, as shown in Aikhenvald’s (2008) cross-linguistic study on “versatile cases”, case markers are also used as clause-linkers in a wide range of genetically diverse languages. However, African languages are not found in Aikhenvald’s sample. Our paper shows that in some subgroups of Nilo-Saharan and Afro-Asiatic case markers are, in fact, attested on subordinate clauses. Focusing on A…

  • Focus in an active/agentive alignment system: The case of Beria (Saharan)

    Open Access•Angelika Jakobi•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2006

Beria, a member of the Saharan language family, is one of the rare languages in Africa exhibiting both an ergative and an active/agentive alignment system of grammatical relations.1 While the active/agentive pattern is shown by the participant reference markers, the ergative pattern is attested both in the constituent order and in the focus markers on the core constituents. In the pragmatically unmarked constituent order, the Agent constituent pr…

  • The Nubian Languages: An Annotated Bibliography

Dieter Aichele, Angelika Jakobi et al.•ARTICLE•Language•1998

When Richard Lepsius published his Nubische Grammatik in 1880, he regretted not having given priority to the Beja language and its greater structural affinities with ancient Egyptian. His regrets have not been widely shared. Over the past century fasci nation with the history of the Nubian languages has not abated, and there is now a cultural renaissance, especially among Nubians who lost their original homes beneath the waters of the High Dam. T…
