  • Bridging family boundaries: Mediating postmodern complexity in urban Sinhalese Sri Lankan families

Prabash Aminda Edirisingha, Prabash Edirisingha et al.•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2018•References: 66

There is a bricolage of competing local and global ideologies, value systems, and practices vying for the attention of urban South Asian consumers. We term this as “postmodern complexity”. Drawing from a three-year ethnographic research expedition on Sinhalese Sri Lankan families, we illustrate the process by which these families mediate postmodern complexity during new family formation. Our findings support an emergent framework to understand th…

  • Inventory of Engineered Nanoparticle-Containing Consumer Products Available in the Singapore Retail Market and Likelihood of Release into the Aquatic Environment

    Open Access•Yuanyuan Zhang, Yu-Rui Leu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

Consumer products containing engineered nanoparticles (ENP) are already entering the marketplace. This leads, inter alia, to questions about the potential for release of ENP into the environment from commercial products. We have inventoried the prevalence of ENP-containing consumer products in the Singapore market by carrying out onsite assessments of products sold in all major chains of retail and cosmetic stores. We have assessed their usage pa…

  • Sense of Place: The Importance for Destination Branding

Open Access•Adriana Campelo, Robert Aitken et al.•ARTICLE•Travel Research Bulletin•2013

Given that brand meanings are socially constructed and culturally dependent, we advocate that a destination branding strategy should begin by understanding what constitutes sense of place as experienced by local residents. The constructs of time, ancestry, landscape, and community were identified as determinants for the sense of place by inhabitants of the Chatham Islands of New Zealand. These constructs comprise meanings that influence the habit…

  • Potential for early warning of viral influenza activity in the community by monitoring clinical diagnoses of influenza in hospital emergency departments

Open Access•Wei Zheng, Helen Wei Zheng et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

Monitoring time series of ED visits clinically diagnosed with influenza could potentially provide three days early warning compared with surveillance of laboratory-confirmed influenza. When current laboratory processing and reporting delays are taken into account this time advantage is even greater

  • Sayings and Doings of Zen Master Raven A Fable in Progress

    Open Access•Robert Aitken•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2000

HEN RAVEN was living near Jack Rabbit Riishi, he visited him frequently to inquire about the Way. One day he asked, "I hear that the Buddha Shakyamuni looked up from beneath the Bodhi tree and saw the morning star and announced his realization. 1 I get the feeling that something is missing from the story. What happened when he saw the star?'' Jack Rabbit laid back his ears, closed his eyes, and said, "He realized the truth of mutually dependent a…

  • The Christian-Buddhist Life and Works of Dwight Goddard

    Robert Aitken•ARTICLE•Buddhist-Christian Studies•1996

In 1932, Dwight Goddard introduced a collection of Mahayana Buddhist texts translated from the Chinese. This collection, entitled A Buddhist Bible, has helped introduce many Americans to Mahayana. The publication of the texts marked the end of a fascinat- ing journey on the part of Goddard from engineer, to Christian mis- sionary and minister, to student, to practitioner of Zen Buddhism. The best record of this journey is Goddard's own writings. …

  • A Zen Wave: Basho's Haiku and Zen

Hiroaki Sato, Robert Aitken•ARTICLE•The Journal of the Association of…•1980

Zen Buddhism distinguishes itself by brilliant flashes of insight and its terseness of expression. The haiku verse form is a superb means of studying Zen modes of thought and expression, for its seventeen syllables impose a rigorous limitation that confines the poet to vital experience. Here haiku by Basho are translated by Robert Aitken, with commentary that provides a new and far deeper understanding of Basho's work than ever before. In presenti…

    Open Access•Robert Aitken•ARTICLE•The Journal of Roman Studies•1956•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In this paper Virgil's description of a plough ( Georgics , 1, 169 ff.) is re-examined in the light of modern records of wooden ploughs from SW Europe, taken in a broad sense to include Italy and the Swiss canton of the Grisons, and from neighbouring Mediterranean regions. This on the assumption that Virgil is describing a single type of plough, not ‘integrating’ types; in other words, that there is such a thing as ‘Virgil's Plough’ and that one …
