  • Dependency length minimization

Open Access•Ilaria De Cesare, Barthe Bloom et al.•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2026

This study investigates the principle of Dependency Length Minimization (DLM) in German from a diachronic perspective, looking at the period from 1600 to 1950. It aims to assess whether any changes in dependency length (DL) can be observed over time. Challenging the standard assumption about diachronic DLM, we argue that DLM effects are modulated by the extralinguistic context in which the language is used and thus do not assume that DL as a meas…

  • Aspectual Verbs in German

Open Access•Ilaria De Cesare, Ulrike Demske•ARTICLE•Journal of Germanic Linguistics•2025

Aspectual verbs with infinitival complements are often considered ambiguous when it comes to the question of whether they should be classified as raising or control verbs. In present-day German, argument structure properties seem to favor a raising analysis, but arguments for a control analysis cannot be dismissed. Word order properties do not provide conclusive evidence either and seem to support the ambiguity of aspectual verbs in present-day G…

  • Word order change in German infinitival complementation

Open Access•Ilaria De Cesare, Sina Bosch et al.•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2024

The present article discusses whether processing factors might play a role in the reduction of word order variability in German infinitival complements of control verbs, connecting evidence from a diachronic corpus study to processing considerations and psycholinguistic findings. We show that intraposition, a linearization pattern that has been claimed to be costly in comprehension due to both center-embedding and temporary ambiguity, became less…

  • New Empirical Approaches to Grammatical Variation and Change

Open Access•Sina Bosch, Ilaria De Cesare et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2021•References: 2

Research on grammatical variation and change has traditionally been based on diachronic and synchronic corpus analysis, but the growing importance of experimental approaches to the study of language has led many researchers to combine corpus study with experimentation to systematically examine linguistic variability and stability

  • Nominalization and argument structure in Early New High German

    Open Access•Ulrike Demske•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2002

Recent work on argument selection couched in a lexical decomposition approach (Ehrich & Rapp 2000) postulates different linking properties for verbs and nouns, challenging current views on argument inheritance. In this paper, I show that the different behavior with respect to verbal and nominal linking observed for Present-Day German does not carry over to ung-nominals in Early New High German. Deverbal nouns and corresponding verbs rather behave…

Der Struktur der Nominalphrase des Deutschen gilt seit Mitte der achtziger Jahre vor allem das Interesse einer generativ ausgerichteten Grammatik. Dieses Interesse gründet sich auf die Einführung der so genannten funktionalen Kategorien in die strukturelle Beschreibung von Wortgruppen und Sätzen. Die daraus folgende Auffassung der Nominalphrase als einer Determinansphrase wirft eine Reihe von Fragen bei der Beschreibung der linken Erweiterungen d…
