Issues in ecosystem valuation: Improving information for decision making
In Spring 1991, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency convened an expert group of ecologists, economists and other social scientists for the purpose of advancing the state of the art of ecosystem valuation methods. This Ecosystem Valuation Forum was organized as a dialogue because it has been clear from the outset that agreement even on the meaning of the term "ecosystem valuation" could not be taken for granted. Individuals from diverse disci…
Information Search following Damage to the Frontal Lobes
Five adult patients with focal brain damage in different areas of the frontal lobes and five matched controls were administered a 20 Questions test. Other tests of planning, problem-solving, and decision-making were also administered to frontal lobe patients. The results indicate that damage to the frontal lobe impairs the ability to impose and utilize hierarchical organization in mental representation

A Reappraisal of Constitutional Age Requirements for Congress and the President
The purpose of this note is to examine the assumptions underlying the age requirements for Congress and the President as specified in the Constitution. The analysis suggests that the framers' grounds for these particular age requirements are invalid. A constitutional amendment is proposed to remedy this situation

Syntactic Clause Boundaries, Speech Timing, and Stuttering Frequency in Adult Stutterers
Nine adult male stutterers read aloud sentences designed to test influences of major syntactic boundary locations on stuttering frequency and on aspects of speech timing. The stutterers were found to produce the same durational cues to syntactic boundary location previously found in normal speech production. Like normals, stutterers lengthen the duration of a word when it occurs in clause-final position, and they are more likely to place a pause …
Acoustical Characteristics of Sentential Focus: Narrow vs. Broad and Single vs. Dual Focus Environments
Acoustical analyses of speech production were conducted to determine the effects of two types of sentence focus distinction on intonational attributes of fundamental voice frequency ( F o ) and duration. In each of two experiments, analyses were performed on seven speakers who orally read sentences containing variations in focus prompted by preceding questions. In Experiment 1, speakers produced higher F o peaks and longer word durations for word…
Acoustical aspects of contrastive stress in question–answer contexts
A series of experiments was conducted to examine the influence of contrastive stress on intonational patterns of duration and fundamental voice frequency (F0). In a preliminary study, intonational patterns in spontaneous speech were compared with the patterns in oral reading of the transcribed spontaneous material. In both circumstances, a general declination of F0 peaks throughout the course of a sentence was not regularly observed, contrary to …
Clausal Intonation After Unilateral Brain Damage
Thirteen right-handed adult speakers, including five patients with unilateral left-hemisphere damage, four patients with unilateral right-hemisphere damage, and four patients with non-neurological damage, read aloud sentences designed to test influences of clause and utterance length on two acoustical measures of intonation, fundamental voice frequency ( F o ) and timing. Patients with unilateral damage to the left-hemisphere exhibited more abnor…

Conjoined Ordering of Color Terms by Children and Adults
Preferences for ordering conjoined color terms in English were examined for twenty first-graders and twenty-one adults. On each trial the subjects were asked to name the two colors included in a pair of intertwined shoelaces. For children the results showed that ordering preferences were determined primarily by differences in brightness rather than hue or saturation, with relatively dark colors ordered before relatively light colors. The hue dime…
Syntax and Speech
Syntax and Speech is the first extensive examination of the relation between sentence structure and the organization of speech. Combining the methods of cognitive psychology, linguistics, and acoustics, the Coopers show that a surprising amount of syntactic information is conveyed by the subtle ways a speaker times the delivery of a sentence. Syntax and Speech provides abundant experimental evidence that the syntactic boundaries of surface phrase…
