Contrasting Depictions in 1920s Italian and British Colonial Missionary Documentaries
the constructions of colonial dynamics in two Catholic missionary films, one Italian and one British, illuminate the respective colonial powers’ contrasting agendas in the 1920s. The Italian documentary Italy in Eritrea and the Catholic Missions (Italia in Eritrea e il ruolo delle missioni, 1922) features Indigenous people, local customs, and Catholic missionaries from the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. This film presents the colonized and colon…
The impact of medical service on the return behavior: A city-level study in China
Due to the constraints of the rural-urban household registration systems, the migrants of China currently receive varying degrees of medical services. The fact that many migrants choose to return to their hometowns due to the inequality in medical care has been a social phenomenon. Using data from the 2017 China Migrant Dynamic Survey (CMDS), this paper explores the effect of medical services on population migration. Probit regression analysis me…

Our comparative analysis tries to understand the status and social role of women after Indian independence, when they were drawn into the nationalist movement through their participat…

Hierarchy Purified: Notes on Dumont and His Critics
The importance of Louis Dumont's work—both for specialists in Indian studies and for general social science theory—is by now obvious. Yet, since the publication of the initial volumes of Contributions to Indian Sociology (old series, coedited with D. Pocock), Dumont's work has been subjected to intensive criticisms that do not simply suggest he is wrong about a particular ethnographic fact, but rather that his approach is wrongheaded, that his st…
