  • L2 processing of filled gaps

Open Access•Zhiyin Renee Dong, Chao Han et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Approaches to…•2023

This paper investigates how late L2 learners resolve filler-gap dependencies (FGD) in real-time and how proficiency and working memory (WM) modulate their brain responses in an event-related potential (ERP) experiment. A group of intermediate to highly proficient Mandarin Chinese learners of English listened to sentences such as “The zebra that the hippo kissed *the camel on the nose ran far away,” in which the extra noun phrase “the camel” creat…

  • The Typology of Applicative/Causative Marking in Tapus

    Open Access•Yanti, NFN Yanti et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistik Indonesia•2021

This paper constitutes an initial examination of the applicative/causative suffix -ge in Tapus, a divergent traditional Minangkabau variety spoken in rural Western Sumatra. Our aim is to show that the similarities and divergences from Standard Indonesian of traditional rural varieties provides insight into the properties of “Indonesian-type” languages in general. The distribution of applicatives/causatives in Tapus is interesting for several reas…

  • The Development of Agent-demoting passives in Malayic

Open Access•Timothy McKinnon, Peter Cole et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Discovery•2018

The di-passive in Malay/Indonesian and other Malayic languages is clearly a European-type agent demotion passive; the agent, nevertheless, unexpectedly exhibits grammatical properties which are cross-linguistically typical of arguments and unusual for adjuncts. We explain the unusual properties of di-passive agents by arguing for the analysis of the di-passive construction as deriving historically from a Philippine-type voice construction in whic…

  • Long‐Distance Anaphora

Open Access•Isabelle Charnavel, C-T James Huang et al.•OTHER•The Wiley Blackwell Companion to…•2017

Cross‐linguistically, long‐distance reflexives do not form a unitary phenomenon but come in a variety of subtypes: as long‐distance bound anaphors, as pronominals, or as entities of an intermediate category. This chapter focuses on the first subtype and on Chinese and some other Asian languages: it describes the prominent syntactic and interpretive properties of long‐distance reflexives and addresses theoretical questions about their analysis and…

  • Object agreement and ‘pro-drop’ in Kerinci Malay

Open Access•Timothy McKinnon, Peter Cole et al.•ARTICLE•Language•2011

Kerinci is a group of grammatically diverse Malayic varieties spoken in Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. This article focuses on a previously undescribed dialect of Kerinci, spoken in the village of Tanjung Pauh Mudik (TPM). Many Kerinci dialects have developed a morphological alternation in root-final syllables as a result of stress-related diachronic changes. In TPM, as in Sungai Penuh Kerinci (described by Steinhauer and Usman (1978), inter…

    Open Access•Peter Cole, Gabriella Hermon•ARTICLE•Syntax•2008•Citada por: 18•Referências: 13

Toba Batak displays a variety of properties that are typologically rare: (1) The predominant word order is V-O-S-IO and V-O-S-Adv. (2) Extraction of direct objects/passive agents (by relativization, etc.) is ungrammatical, but subjects, IOs, and adverbials can be extracted. (3) In Toba Batak anaphoric binding, the active subject binds the DO and active DOs can bind the IO, but, additionally, the "passive agent" can bind a passive subject. We argu…

  • How irregular is WH in situ in Indonesian

Peter Cole, Gabriella Hermon et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2005

Contemporary approaches to Generative syntax lead to the expectation that WH in situ would be subject to few distributional restrictions; but a series of complex constraints apply to in-situ WH in subject position in Standard Indonesian. We argue that this distribution does not follow from principles of formal grammar, but rather from a constraint on the relationship between syntax and information structure. We then turn to Colloquial Jakarta Ind…

Peter Cole, Gabriella Hermon et al.•BOOK•Long Distance Reflexives•2000

This new volume serves to focus and clarify the debate surrounding long-distance reflexives by examining the role of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics/discourse in the use of long-distance reflexives in a variety of languages. Graduate students, upper class undergraduates, theoretical linguists, computational linguists, psycholinguists, and linguists at large will find this an important tool. Syntacticians, as well as specialists in language acqu…

  • The Typology of Wh-Movement, Wh-Questions in Malay

    Open Access•Peter Cole, Gabriella Hermon•ARTICLE•Syntax•1998•Citada por: 27

This article investigates the complex facts of Malay wh-questions, and suggests a theory of how Malay wh-questions fit into the typology of wh-questions permitted by a Minimalist conception of Universal Grammar. The paper examines the principles that account for overt wh-movement, wh-in-situ and partial wh-movement in Malay. We argue that the apparent optionality seen in Malay reduces to whether, in the lexicon, a question word consists of an ope…

  • The Acquisition of Subjecthood

Peter Cole, Wayne Harbert et al.•ARTICLE•Language•1980•Citada por: 10

This paper examines the process by which subject properties are acquired by noun phrases not previously having those properties. The evidence presented indicates that behavioral subject properties (like the ability of an NP to delete under EQUI) are acquired historically prior to subject coding properties (like nominative case-marking and control of verb agreement)
