Remote Work and Labor Institutions
This volume shows how remote work is regulated by a holistic set of arrangements that govern all forms of employment, weaving together labor institutions in complex ways that the book presents and explains. The scholarship assembled here examines the handling of remote work through institutional analysis cutting across national cases and focusing on both fundamental rights and regulatory challenges. The rights that are examined – by analyzing the…
The Cambridge Handbook of the Sustainable Development Goals and International Law
In 2015, the United Nations established seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that aimed 'to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all' by 2030. The chapters within this collection address each of these SDGs, considering how they relate to one another and international law, and what institutions could aid their implementation. Development has been a contentious topic since the decolonization period after World War II, and issue…
Reform of the Posting of Workers Regime – An Assessment of the Practical Impact on Unfree Labour Relations
The 2018 Amending Directive is the most recent response to the failings of the European Union (EU) legal framework for the posting of workers. This article uses an original case study of workers posted from Serbia via Hungary to Slovakia as a basis on which to assess the practical impact of this latest Directive. We recognize the capacity for EU Member States to do more to protect posted workers than was possible previously. However, we also note…
Supply Chains and Unfree Labor
The protection of labor rights of temporary migrant workers in global supply chains requires further theoretical and policy research. Through the case of Serbian workers in Slovak electronics supply chains, we look at how the transnational recruitment of labor via temporary work agencies (TWAs) for globally organized production generates heightened forms of exploitation and unfree labor relations. We show that such exploitation occurs in a regula…
Regulating Workplace Technology
The development of workplace technology has tended to reflect the interests of employers in promoting profitability, whereas worker concerns have been acknowledged in legislation that restricts the most egregious of employer practices. This chapter explores that history and the current legal and regulatory framework, which is explicable with reference to resistance. However, it is suggested that we could also view technology in the workplace as p…
A Revised Role for Trade Unions as Designed by New Labour
A key objective of British unions is to develop their representative role so as to establish their relevance to the workforce and thereby reverse the overall decline in trade union membership. To many, the legislative reforms undertaken by New Labour since 1999 offer some hope that this can be achieved. These reforms seem to provide a pyramid of representation, whereby trade unions can establish their relevance when they ‘accompany’ individual em…

International Promises and Domestic Pragmatism
This paper explores the rhetoric and reality surrounding implementation of international labour standards in the Employment Relations Act 1999. It focuses on UK commitments relating to freedom of association and considers whether the new legislation goes any significant way towards their fulfilment. The paper begins by outlining obligations which arise from a state's membership of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and ratification of IL…
