  • Inequality in Education: A Comparison of Australian Indigenous and Nonindigenous Populations

David Gunawan, William E Griffith et al.•ARTICLE•Statistics Politics and Policy•2022

Data from the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey is used to estimate distributions for the level of educational attainment for Australian indigenous and nonindigenous populations for the years 2001, 2006, 2014 and 2017. Bayesian inference is used to analyse how these ordinal categorical distributions have changed over time and to compare indigenous and nonindigenous distributions. Both the level of educational attainment and…

  • Inference for Income Distributions Using Grouped Data

Gholamreza Hajargasht, William E Griffith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2012

We develop a general approach to estimation and inference for income distributions using grouped or aggregate data that are typically available in the form of population shares and class mean incomes, with unknown group bounds. We derive generic moment conditions and an optimal weight matrix that can be used for generalized method-of-moments (GMM) estimation of any parametric income distribution. Our derivation of the weight matrix and its invers…

  • Global Income Distributions and Inequality, 1993 and 2000: Incorporating Country-Level Inequality Modeled with Beta Distributions

Duangkamon Chotikapanich, William E Griffith et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2012

Using a method-of-moments estimator, flexible three-parameter beta distributions are fitted to aggregate country-level income data to overcome an untenable assumption of previous studies that persons within each income group receive the same income. Regional and global income distributions are derived as weighted mixtures of country-specific distributions. Analytical expressions for Gini and Theil's measures of inequality at country, regional, an…

  • What Creates Abnormal Profits

    Open Access•William E Griffith, William Griffiths et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 5

In this paper, we re‐examine the debate regarding the determinants of persistent abnormal profits. Abnormal profits are estimated using data on tangible and intangible capital for 2689 Australian firms over a 17‐year period. The determinants of abnormal profits are then estimated using variables collated from accounting and survey data on innovation and management practices. We find that market share, use of lead‐time strategies, and industry con…

  • Estimating and Combining National Income Distributions Using Limited Data

Duangkamon Chotikapanich, William E Griffith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2007

A major problem encountered in studies of income inequality at regional and global levels is estimating income distributions from data that are in summary form. In this article we estimate national and regional income distributions within a general framework that relaxes the assumption of constant income within groups. We propose a technique to estimate the parameters of a beta-2 distribution using grouped data. We model regional income distribut…

  • Estimating Lorenz Curves Using a Dirichlet Distribution

Duangkamon Chotikapanich, William E Griffith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2002

The Lorenz curve relates the cumulative proportion of income to the cumulative proportion of population. When a particular functional form of the Lorenz curve is specified, it is typically estimated by linear or nonlinear least squares estimation techniques that have good properties when the error terms are independently and normally distributed. Observations on cumulative proportions are clearly neither independent nor normally distributed. This…

In the short run it will cause more problems for the West. In the long run, however, it may be more dangerous to the Soviet Union in Muslim Soviet Central Asia.2 The Western model of modernization, industrialization, and rational bureaucra…

Professor Korbonski has written a thoughtful and thought-provoking essay with which I find myself largely in disagreement, in general and in detail. I hope that the following brief comments will indicate with what, and why, I disagree. But in spite of my disagreements I think that Professor Korbonski's effort was well worth making. Indeed, I share his view that the study of East European politics can well profit from the study of political develo…

The purpose of the analysis was to measure the degree of communication between husbands and wives with respect to family-size goals. The data were interview responses from 547 husbands and their wives living in Dacca East Pakistan in 1963. As had been true in previous analyses of Puerto Rico and of Mysore India large proportions of the Dacca couples agreed about their family-size goals. In addition large proportions of husbands and wives were abl…

    Zbigniew Brzezinski, William E Griffith•ARTICLE•Foreign Affairs•1961•Cited by: 7

THE United States has never had a realistic and effective foreign policy toward Eastern Europe. During World War II the official American position was that the disposition of Eastern European problems should await the peace settle ment, but this was primarily a rationalization for a lack of policy. After the war, when the area became dominated by the Soviet Union (to some extent because of Western passivity), the Amer ican interest in Eastern Eur…

  • Husbands' vs. Wives' responses to a fertility survey

    David Yaukey, Beryl J Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1965•Cited by: 6•References: 2

A fertility survey of 547 couples was carried out in Dacca, East Pakistan in 1963. Both husbands and wives were interviewed. Therefore, it was possible to study the degree and nature of differences in husbands' and wives' responses and, on some topics, to infer which spouse tended to give the more accurate responses. Husbands reported more use of contraception and seemed to give more precise reports on time elapsed since marriage and since last l…

The radical worsening of Sino-Soviet relations began in the spring of 1958 and the “ point of no return ” occurred at the latest in the summer of 1959. Indeed, since 1958 the public dispute has followed a cyclical course of escalation and partial détente. Each cycle has made Moscow-Peking relations worse than before and given other communist parties more autonomy from the Soviet Union. The apparent partial détentes have ostensibly been caused by …
