Universale phonologische Strukturen und Prozesse
Speech perception and the learnability of languages
To what extent can natural human languages as abstract systems be learned without any prior (innate?) knowledge of the abstract principles that universally constrain their structure, and why are natural human languages universally restricted as to the kinds of phonological contrasts that occur? This paper explores some aspects of this issue with respect to the contribution of phonology in first (L1) and, to a lesser extent, second language (L2) a…

Developmental Sequence: An Alternative Approach to Morpheme Order
This paper is a critical evaluation of the morpheme order approach and it is intended to complement recent criticism raised by Rosansky (1976a-b) and Andersen (1977). They emphasize methodological shortcomings that derive from data collection procedures and from the application of statistics in studies by Dulay & Burt (1974a-b). It seems that Rosansky and Andersen, though questioning the extrinsic methodology, do not challenge the notion of morph…
Four early stages in the development of Li negation
No reasonably successful theory of the acquisition of negation seems to have yet been proposed. Most studies describe post hoc what has taken place; but they fail to go on to suggest a theory that will predict what will take place. McNeill seems to be the only one to have explicitly aimed at a theory with at least a certain amount of predictive capacity, but his views leave much to be desired. This paper outlines an alternative proposal to cover …

Some Stages in the Acquisition of Questions by Monolingual Children
This article summarizes data on the acquisition of questions from German, English, Latvian, Swedish, and other languages. More specifically, it deals with the production of questions by children. The aim behind this survey is to prepare the ground for developing a theory on the acquisition of questions by children in such a way that the developmental sequence can be predicted for any natural language. Of course, in the present state of affairs, r…
