  • La linguistique en toute simplicité / Linguistics, simply

    Open Access•Denis Bouchard•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2019

    Open Access•Denis Bouchard•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2005

In linguistics, explanation is based on whatever initial conditions are imposed on language, and so it necessarily functions within the range of options allowed by the laws of nature. Thus, since syntax is a computational system, it is subject to principles of efficient computation. Moreover, the Faculty of Language is located in human beings, so this means that it is constrained by the conceptual and perceptual systems of human beings. In this c…

  • The origins of language variation

    Denis Bouchard•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation Yearbook•2003

Linguistic variation derives from properties of the physical and conceptual make-up of human beings which were adapted to produce language. This adaptative approach is contrasted with the Minimalist Program, in which properties specific to language are said to be different from anything found in the organic world (Chomsky 1995). Six basic cases are compared. Whereas the analysis in the Minimalist Program is ultimately a listing of construction-sp…

  • The concept of 'universal' and the Case of Japanese

    Open Access•Denis Bouchard•ARTICLE•Lingua•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 9

  • Syntax and Human Experience

Denis Bouchard, Nicolas Ruwet et al.•ARTICLE•Language•1993

[Ruwet] raises fundamental questions about the place of grammar in the study of language and provides several studies which suggest the possibility that some core data are outside the realm of grammatical explanation. A very remarkable book, in which the breadth of Ruwet's reflection is both challenging and deeply rewarding. Denis Bouchard, University of Quebec, Montreal

  • French voici/voilà and the Analysis of pro-Drop

    Denis Bouchard•ARTICLE•Language•1988•Cited by: 2

Two peculiar properties of French voici/voilà are shown to be directly related: the fact that they are subjectless verbs follows from their not being marked for tense or subject agreement, although they are interpreted as present indicative. This in turn supports an analysis of the pro-drop phenomenon where empty category subjects are present at all levels in the structure of ‘subjectless’ sentences, albeit not an analysis which has ‘rich agreeme…
