A Meta‐Analysis of Hybrid Language Instruction and Call for Future Research
In this meta‐analysis, we estimate the effectiveness of hybrid language instruction overall and across a number of moderator variables by aggregating effect sizes from 11 studies with 34 samples. Results suggest hybrid language instruction can be just as effective as traditional face‐to‐face (f2f) instruction, as indicated by the negligible differences between hybrid courses and traditional f2f courses ( d = .14). Furthermore, studies employing w…

The construct validation of self-ratings of communicative language ability
The trait structure of an experimental self-rating test of communicative language ability was investigated through the use of MTMM design and CFA procedure. The language abilities we attempted to measure comprised three main traits: grammatical competence, pragmatic competence, and socio linguistic competence. Three different question types were used. The subjects were 116 non-native English speakers from the Salt Lake City area. The results of t…

The Construct Validation of Tests of Communicative Competence
U This collection of articles on testing for communicative competence, edited by Palmer, Groot and Trosper, is an important addition to TESOL's list of publications. It is primarily a report of a colloquium held at the 1979 TESOL Convention in Boston, but it also includes one paper presented in the follow-up colloquium in 1980 in San Francisco. While the volume might be criticized for what it fails to include, it is basically a milestone work, in…

The Construct Validation of Some Components of Communicative Proficiency
The notion of communicative competence has received wide attention in the past few years, and numerous attempts have been made to define it. Canale and Swain (1980) have reviewed these attempts and have developed a framework which defines several hypothesized components of communicative competence and makes the implicit claim that tests of components of communicative competence measure different abilities. In this study we examine the construct v…
The Construct Validation of the Fsi Oral Interview1
The validation of oral language proficiency tests has long been problematical. The most common approaches to this problem have involved concurrent validation procedures for relating "indirect" measures to so-called "direct" measures. The most frequently used criterion in such studies has been the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) oral interview. In validating the FSI interview itself, however, criterion-referenced procedures are not possible since …
Compartmentalized and Integrated Control
This paper provides some empirical support for the hypothesis that there are two types of language control: compartmentalized control in which performance on discrete point tests or achievement tests is relatively unrelated to performance on communication tests and intergrated control in which the two types of performance are more highly related. Data is presented from three studies: one, a study of individual differences; the other two, controll…
The Dialog Game
In this paper, the authors state that Proper Intake (technical term) is an important-but frequently neglected-component of classroom language teaching when the goal is for the students to be able to communicate informally. One technique for providing students with Proper Intake is the Dialog Game, a form of communication game. The Dialog Game is presented here as a prototype which can be adapted for any content area and for students at any level.…
Teaching Communication
A second-language teacher's classroom activity can be optimized by considering its relationship to the development, in his students, of communication skills. The development of these skills presupposes the presence and insights of a live teacher, and cannot be accomplished by a machine. That the techniques advocated here are practical, is illustrated by a description of communication practice (CP), as well as the following considerations: the int…
Thai Tone Variants and the Language Teachers
It is common knowledge to teachers of tone languages that the phonetic shapes of tones vary in different phonological environments. This paper, based upon a limited instrumental study of Thai, provides a technique by which a teacher can identify the environmental conditions under which confusion is likely to occur, Two separate methods of charting are illustrated. One shows individual tone variation, and the other shows the effect of a specified …
A Classroom Technique for Teaching Vocabulary
The primary purpose of this paper is to present a method for conducting a vocabulary class. This method will, in addition to helping the students learn vocabulary, also help them develop their reading comprehension, aural comprehension, and fluency in asking and answering questions.1 Students who can profit from this technique are those who have learned how to produce and answer questions, since their oral performance in class often consists of q…
