  • Psycholinguistics: Quantitative Methods

    Open Access•Jill Jegerski•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2025

Psycholinguistic research methods like self‐paced reading and eye‐tracking during reading yield precise data in milliseconds that indicate how much time participants spend looking at and reading specific words in a stimulus sentence. Collecting and analyzing such time‐based data entails some special considerations and three fundamental ones are covered in this entry. First, the design of stimulus sentences is an exacting task that must address mu…

  • Variability in the Online Processing of Subject–Verb Number Agreement in Spanish as a Heritage Language: The Role of Lexical Frequency

    Open Access•Jill Jegerski, Sara Fernández Cuenca•ARTICLE•Languages•2025•References: 53

This eye tracking study examined the role of lexical frequency in the processing of non-local verbal number agreement by heritage speakers of Spanish. Few prior studies of heritage bilingualism have investigated the role of word frequency in the comprehension or production of morphosyntax, and none have employed a real-time measure of sentence processing, despite the well-known sensitivity of such methods to word frequency and the proposal of som…

  • The Role of Determiners in the Processing of Gender Agreement Morphology by Heritage Speakers of Spanish

Open Access•Danny Melendez, Jill Jegerski et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2025•References: 44

This eye-tracking study examined how heritage speakers of Spanish process gender agreement morphology at a distance, focusing on the activation of the gender feature during sentence processing. Previous work is conceptually replicated and further extended by assessing (1) whether reduced sensitivity to gender agreement mismatches when another word intervenes between the head noun and its modifying adjective stems from weakened gender feature acti…

  • A role for verb regularity in the L2 processing of the Spanish subjunctive mood: Evidence from eye-tracking

Open Access•Sara Fernández Cuenca, Jill Jegerski•ARTICLE•Studies in Second Language…•2023

The present study investigated the second language processing of grammatical mood in Spanish. Eye-movement data from a group of advanced proficiency second language users revealed nativelike processing with irregular verb stimuli but not with regular verb stimuli. A comparison group of native speakers showed the expected effect with both types of stimuli, but these were slightly more robust with irregular verbs than with regular verbs. We propose…

  • The processing of the object marker a by heritage Spanish speakers

    Open Access•Jill Jegerski•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Objectives: Previous research has found that object marking with the Spanish particle a is variable among heritage Spanish speakers, based on data from offline experimental measures. The online self-paced reading method used for the present study has the advantage of being less metalinguistic, which may be important with heritage speakers. This incremental measure of sentence processing can also examine whether the single letter form a is simply …

  • Sentence Processing in Spanish as a Heritage Language: A Self-Paced Reading Study of Relative Clause Attachment

    Open Access•Jill Jegerski•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 43

Heritage Spanish is often influenced by English, and previous research on late Spanish-English bilinguals suggests that their relative clause attachment preferences in Spanish are affected by English exposure. Nevertheless, recent work with heritage speakers has revealed that early (high-proficiency) Spanish-English bilinguals demonstrate a monolingual-like high-attachment preference in Spanish. Offline data from this self-paced reading study sho…

  • On-line relative clause attachment strategy in heritage speakers of Spanish

Open Access•Jill Jegerski, Gregory D Keating et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Aims: Previous research on relative clause attachment has found that late Spanish–English bilinguals tend to parse both languages with a single strategy that is consistent with that of the language in which they are currently immersed. One recent investigation using an off-line measure has suggested that the same may not be true of early Spanish–English bilinguals, who did not show effects of greater exposure to English in the comprehension of am…

  • Experimental Designs in Sentence Processing Research: A Methodological Review and User’s Guide

    Open Access•Gregory D Keating, Jill Jegerski•ARTICLE•Studies in Second Language…•2015

Since the publication of Clahsen and Felser’s (2006) keynote article on grammatical processing in language learners, the online study of sentence comprehension in adult second language (L2) learners has quickly grown into a vibrant and prolific subfield of SLA. As online methods begin to establish a foothold in SLA research, it is important that researchers in our field design sentence-comprehension experiments that adhere to the fundamental prin…

  • The processing of case in near-native Spanish

    Open Access•Jill Jegerski•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 5

This article reports a study that sought to determine whether non-native sentence comprehension can show sensitivity to two different types of Spanish case marking. Sensitivity to case violations was generally more robust with indirect objects in ditransitive constructions than with differential object marking of animate direct objects, even among native speakers of Spanish, which probably reflects linguistic differences in the two types of case.…

  • Cross-linguistic variation and the acquisition of pronominal reference in L2 Spanish

    Open Access•Jill Jegerski, Bill Vanpatten et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2011•Cited by: 7•References: 5

The current investigation tested two predictions regarding second language (L2) processing at the syntax—discourse interface: (1) that L2 performance on measures of interface phenomena can differ from that of native speakers; and (2) that cross-linguistic influence can be a source of such divergence. Specifically, we examined the offline interpretation of ambiguous subject pronouns with intrasentential antecedents in Spanish and English, includin…

  • The Effects of Instruction on Linguistic Development in Spanish Heritage Language Speakers

    Open Access•Kim Potowski, Jill Jegerski et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2009•Cited by: 14•References: 28

The current study compared the effects of two second language (L2) instruction types-processing instruction (VanPatten, 2004) and traditional output-based instruction-on the development of the Spanish past subjunctive among U.S. Spanish heritage language speakers and traditional L2 learners. After exposure to instruction, both the heritage learners and the L2 learners showed significant improvement on interpretation and production tasks. Only the…
