Spatiotemporal trends in and challenges of addressing tuberculosis in Brazil before and after the Covid-19 pandemic, 2001–2023
Objective. To identify spatiotemporal patterns and clusters of tuberculosis (TB) in Brazil between 2001 and 2023, assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on TB trends, and provide recommendations for targeted interventions. Methods. This ecological study analyzed secondary data from Brazil’s Notifiable Diseases Information System (known as SINAN), which covers all confirmed TB cases during the study period. Three main indicators were analyzed:…
Mapping vulnerability for increased Covid-19 susceptibility and worse outcomes
Introduction: Infectious diseases can spread rapidly in the globalized world, and the complex intersection of individual, social, economic, and cultural factors make it difficult to identify vulnerabilities in the face of pandemics. Methods: Therefore, this study aimed to identify vulnerability factors to infection and worse outcomes associated with COVID-19. This is a scoping review study of six databases that selected publications between 2019 …
Trends in tuberculosis incidence and mortality coefficients in Brazil, 2011–2019
Objective. To analyze the temporal trend of tuberculosis incidence and mortality rates in Brazil between 2011 and 2019. Methods. This was an ecological time series study of tuberculosis incidence and mortality rates in Brazil between 2011 and 2019. Data were extracted from the Notifiable Disease Information System and the Mortality Information System, and population estimates were from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Trends w…
A spatial-mechanistic model to estimate subnational tuberculosis burden with routinely collected data
Reliable subnational estimates of TB incidence would allow national policy makers to focus disease control resources in areas of highest need. We developed an approach for generating small area estimates of TB incidence, and the fraction of individuals missed by routine case detection, based on available notification and mortality data. We demonstrate the feasibility of this approach by creating municipality-level burden estimates for Brazil. We …
