  • Scoping review of evidence on front-of-pack warning labels and nutrition and health variables in Peru

    Open Access•Gabriela V Proaño, Lorena Saavedra-Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2026

Objective. Front-of-pack labeling (FOPL) was implemented in Peru as a national prevention strategy, but little is known about its evaluation, impact, or effectiveness in nutrition and health. This scoping review shows the evidence on front-of-pack warning labels and nutrition and health variables in Peru. Methods. The search was conducted (September 2024 and June 2025) through electronic databases (MEDLINE, SciELO, CAB abstracts, FSTA, Scopus) an…

  • Application of a geospatial query tool to characterise the community food environment and examine associations with dietary quality

Open Access•Laís Vargas Botelho, Dayan Carvalho Ramos Salles De Oliveira et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

These findings underscore the need for targeted public policies aimed at promoting healthier food environments, reducing social inequalities in food access within Chilean cities, and improving dietary quality

Open Access•Francisco Diez-Canseco, Victoria Cavero et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Nutritional warnings are used as a public health strategy to address obesity. Peru approved in 2013 and implemented in 2019 a law requiring nutritional warnings on the marketing and packaging of processed foods high in sugar, sodium, saturated fat, and containing trans-fat. The complexity behind the design and approval of these policies over six years provides unique learnings, that inform the obesity prevention context, especially when proposed …

  • Sugar-sweetened beverage purchases in urban Peru before the implementation of taxation and warning label policies

    Open Access•Caitlin M Lowery, Lorena Saavedra‐garcia et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Nearly all households purchased high-sugar taxed beverages, although volume purchases of taxed and untaxed beverages declined slightly from 2016 to 2017. Households with high SES and high education purchased the highest volume of taxed beverages, highlighting the need to consider possible differential impacts of the tax policy change by sub-population groups

  • Reducing salt in bread

    Open Access•Lorena Saavedra‐garcia, Lorena Saavedra-Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2016

Objectives To explore salt content in bread and to evaluate the feasibility of reducing salt contained in ‘pan francés’ bread. Design The study had two phases. Phase 1, an exploratory phase, involved the estimation of salt contained in bread as well as a triangle taste test to establish the amount of salt to be reduced in ‘pan francés’ bread without detection by consumers. In Phase 2, a quasi-experimental, pre–post intervention study assessed the…
