  • Transforming Flagstaff into a Dementia Friendly City

Open Access•Mary Gemma O'Donnell, Eric Cerino et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2026

Background: Developing a Dementia Friendly city involves cultivating a dynamic, cooperative community where individuals with dementia and their caregivers are valued and fully supported. In Flagstaff, Arizona, a culturally diverse mountain college town, this initiative seeks to address inequities in dementia care for underserved populations. Objectives: The primary goal was to establish the Northern Arizona Dementia Friendly Community Council as …

  • At the Intersection of Race, Socioeconomics, and Chronic Illness

Michael J Mccarthy, Anjanette Wells et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work in Public Health•2022

Although the overall incidence of stroke in the United States has decreased in recent years, the incidence of stroke among Black Americans has not changed. This has resulted in a widening gap between White and Black stroke survivors and their families. A variety of factors contribute to this inequity including social determinants of health (e.g., adverse life events, discrimination, neighborhood deprivation, lack of access to health care). This a…

  • Functional Limitations and Barriers to Care Influence the Likelihood of Adherence to Mammography Guideline

Rie Suzuki, Michael J Mccarthy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2021

Objective: In this study, we examined the influence of having a functional limitation (FL) on the likelihood of adherence to mammography guidelines, as well as the potential moderating role of barriers to care on this relationship. Methods: Women aged 50-75 years from the 2017 National Health Interview Survey were assessed for FL and barriers to care as predictors mammography screening prevalence using weighted logistic regression. Results: Of 56…

  • Development and Validation of a Community Assessment Survey for Diverse Rural Family Caregivers of People With Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias

    Michael J Mccarthy, Morgan Lee-Regalado Hustead et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2021

Many individuals with Alzheimer disease and related dementias receive care from family members and friends. Rurality adds increased complexity to care, especially for diverse caregivers. This study details the development and content validation process for a community assessment survey for rural white, Latinx, and American Indian/Alaska Native Alzheimer disease and related dementias caregivers. Foundational survey items were based upon instrument…

  • Feasibility of the Hand in Hand Relationship Intervention for Stroke Survivor–Caregiver Dyads

Open Access•Michael J Mccarthy, Angélica Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2020•References: 2

Purpose: A strong interpersonal relationship after stroke is important for the prevention of depression in survivors and family caregivers. This study aimed to test the feasibility of quality of relationship intervention for stroke dyads called Hand in Hand (HiH). Methods: Sixteen dyads were randomized into either the HiH group ( n = 8) or information, support, and referral (ISR) control group ( n = 8). HiH dyads received up to eight sessions, wi…

  • Analysis of the Influence of microRNAs in Lithium Response in Bipolar Disorder

    Open Access•Céline S Reinbold, Andreas J Forstner et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a common, highly heritable neuropsychiatric disease characterized by recurrent episodes of mania and depression. Lithium is the best-established long-term treatment for BD, even though individual response is highly variable. Evidence suggests that some of this variability has a genetic basis. This is supported by the largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) of lithium response to date conducted by the International Co…

  • Does the Time of Drug Administration Alter the Metabolic Risk of Aripiprazole

Open Access•Danielle A Chipchura, Zachary Freyberg et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

Antipsychotic drugs cause metabolic abnormalities through a mechanism that involves antagonism of D 2 dopamine receptors (D 2 R). Under healthy conditions, insulin release follows a circadian rhythm and is low at night, and in pancreatic beta-cells, D 2 Rs negatively regulate insulin release. Since they are sedating, many antipsychotics are dosed at night. However, the resulting reduction in overnight D 2 R activity may disrupt 24 h rhythms in in…

  • A mixed-methods study of smoking attitudes and behaviors among dual-smoker stroke survivor-caregiver dyads

    Open Access•Michael J Mccarthy, Wendi S Craddock et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 25

Although cigarette smoking is a major contributor to continued health problems after stroke, the majority of stroke survivors do not quit smoking. This may be due in part to the high rate of smoking among committed partners of stroke survivors. This study investigated the experiences of 11 dual-smoker stroke survivor-caregiver dyads, identifying themes which may be useful for understanding this entrenched population: managing the addiction as a d…

  • Comparison of Service Effectiveness for Youth With Depressed Versus Nondepressed Caregivers

Open Access•Michael J Mccarthy, Michael Mccarthy et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•2015•References: 1

Purpose: (1) To compare demographic, mental health, service usage, and emotional and behavioral characteristics and strengths of youth receiving care from depressed versus nondepressed caregivers and (2) to determine whether a community-based program for reducing problematic behaviors and bolstering strengths is equally effective for youth with depressed versus nondepressed caregivers. Methods: Data from 165 caregiver–youth dyads were analyzed us…

  • Health Behavior Change Following Chronic Illness in Middle and Later Life

Results provide important new information on health behavior changes among those with chronic disease and suggest that intensive efforts are required to help initiate and maintain lifestyle improvements among this population

  • A New Look at Vocabulary in EFL

    Michael J Mccarthy•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•1984

Attention has recently been turned to the problems of vocabulary in foreign-language teaching, and a steadily growing amount of work is beginning to challenge assumptions that have relegated vocabulary teaching to a secondary position in the priorities of language teaching. However, the teacher of English as a foreign language would be forgiven for holding the view that not much vocabulary teaching goes on at all, especially if it is true that te…
