The Trimodal Structure of a Folk Poem
The Word and the Phonological Hierarchy of Mezquital Otomi
Prosodic features have frequently been related to the syllable, or viewed as phonemes extractable from a continuum of speech. In contrast, the Mezquital Otomi phonological word is the domain in which interacting systems of stress and tone operate. The structure of the word nucleus (simple or complex) determines the rules by which basic tone sequences are modified. A balance of the following components (in ranked order) is crucial to word structur…
Mezquital Otomi Verb Fusion
A previous paper focused on a process of affixation operating on the Mezquital Otomi verb-root-initial consonant. In brief, this process involves a series of glottal elements (?, h, and voicing) fused with root-initial stops, and a series of palatal elements (y, ñ, and t) fused with root-initial glottal consonants, ? and h. The present paper describes other simulfixes to complete the discussion. Two other processes, prefixation and suffixation, a…
Simulfixation in Aspect Markers of Mezquital Otomi
In Mezquital Otomi certain phonological components (rather than phonemes as such) appear to differentiate between the aspect markers of the verbs. For example, the difference between the incompletive form ‘is or was scraping’ and the completive ‘did or will scrape (at a point of time)‘ is the component of voicing. Such components appear to have morphemic status in relation to the distribution of a large proportion of verb roots. The phonemic syll…

Spanish Adjective Position: Phonetic Stress and Emphasis
The position of conjunctive adjective in Spanish is one of most perplexing syntactical and pedagogical problems in this language. For all its difficulties, however, problem has received scant attention from Hispanic linguists and, as a result, two traditional beliefs have developed: first, that dicta of standard authorities (The Academy, Bello, Ramsey, Lenz, etc.) are adequately explanatory of positional phenomena, and, second, that usage apparen…
