Mummy Lake
Insights from a synthesis of old and new climate-proxy data from the Pyramid and Winnemucca lake basins for the period 48 to 11.5 cal ka
Some thoughts on the factors that controlled prehistoric maize production in the American Southwest with application to southwestern Colorado
Dating North America's oldest petroglyphs, Winnemucca Lake subbasin, Nevada
The rise and fall of Lake Bonneville between 45 and 10.5 ka
The cleaning of burned and contaminated archaeological maize prior to 87Sr/86Sr analysis
Possible sources of archaeological maize found in Chaco Canyon and Aztec Ruin, New Mexico
Development and evaluation of geochemical methods for the sourcing of archaeological maize
Isotope sourcing of prehistoric willow and tule textiles recovered from western Great Basin rock shelters and caves – proof of concept
The Use of Total Lake-Surface Area as an Indicator of Climatic Change
Variation in the size of lakes in the Lahontan basin is topographically constrained. River diversion also has played a major role in regulating lake size in Lahontan subbasins. The proper gage of lake response to change in the hydrologic balance is neither lake depth (level) nor lake volume but instead lake-surface area. Normalization of surface area is necessary when comparing surface areas of lakes in basins having different topographies. To a …
Lake-Level Variation in the Lahontan Basin for the Past 50,000 Years
Selected radiocarbon data on surficial materials from the Lahontan basin, Nevada and California, provide a chronology of lake-level variation for the past 50,000 yr. A moderate-sized lake connected three western Lahontan subbasins (the Smoke Creek-Black Rock Desert subbasin, the Pyramid Lake subbasin, and the Winnemucca Dry Lake subbasin) from about 45,000 to 16,500 yr B.P. Between 50,000 and 45,000 yr B.P., Walker Lake rose to its sill level in …
Paleoclimatic Significance of Lake-Level Fluctuations in the Lahontan Basin
An energy flux balance model has been developed which treats evaporation as a function of air temperature, surface water temperature, precipitable water aloft, the amount, height, and type of sky cover, and the optical air mass. The model has been used to estimate the mean historical evaporation rate for Pyramid Lake, Nevada, using as input climatic data from the Reno area averaged over the period 1950–1975. Estimated and measured values of the m…
