    Since 1949, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Communist government have made extensive efforts to bring Taiwan under their control in order to achieve reunification. Peking was extremely militant in 1949 and the early 1950s and threatened to bloodwash Taiwan, but made no serious efforts to take it over by force.
