Non-destructive examination of ancient vitreous materials from Southwest Asia: Synchrotron computed tomography at the Beats beamline of Sesame
Studying ancient vitreous materials is important in different cultural heritage research fields. • Synchrotron X-ray computed tomography (SXCT) allows a non-invasive assessment of unique specimens. • Protocols for SCXT scanning, 3D image reconstruction, and processing are presented. • SCXT provides superior resolution and contrast compared to laboratory micro-CT. • The manufacturing and degradation processes of ancient archaeological glass are re…
Potential of synchrotron X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRDCT) for a 3D non-destructive and/or non-invasive characterisation of cultural heritage geomaterials (CHG)
The present work describes the high potential of the recently developed synchrotron X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRDCT) for 3D mapping of crystalline and amorphous phases in Geomaterials of Cultural Heritage (CHG). The paper critically discusses the promising results and limitations of XRDCT in Cultural Heritage applications. XRDCT has been applied herein to diverse CHG materials, spanning from archaeological ceramics, and stone conserv…
A new laboratory‐based method to experimentally induce diagenetic modifications in human bone tissue using archaeological gravesoils
The conditions of the burial environment trigger microstructural modifications and physical‐chemical changes in the bone, such as chemical dissolution, increase of crystallinity, chemical exchanges, collagen degradation and changes in porosity, hence to reproduce these patterns is a challenging task. This work presents a new method to accelerate the diagenetic processes in the laboratory. Artificial aging is obtained by immersion at 80°C in “enri…
The effectiveness of di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAP) consolidation treatment on lime-based mortars weathered by freeze-thaw cycles
Diagenesis of juvenile skeletal remains: A multimodal and multiscale approach to examine the post-mortem decay of children's bones
Di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate for the consolidation of lime-based historic mortars - Preliminary research
