  • Stratigraphy, fossils, and age of sediments at the upper pit of the Lost Chicken gold mine

    Open Access•John Matthews, John V Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

The “upper pit” at the Lost Chicken placer gold mine in east central Alaska contains fossils that provide information on the flora and insect fauna of interior Alaska just before the onset of global cooling at 2.5 myr. Fossils come from sediments interbedded with the Lost Chicken tephra (dated at 2.9 ± 0.4 myr—early Late Pliocene) and portray the floodplain and valley of a small creek within a region dominated by a coniferous forest richer in gen…

  • Pliocene terrace gravels of the ancestral Yukon River near Circle, Alaska

    Open Access•Thomas A Ager, John V Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1994

  • The last (Koy-Yukon) interglaciation in the Yukon

    Open Access•Charles E Schweger, John V Matthews•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1991

  • Circum-Arctic Late Tertiary/Early Pleistocene Stratigraphy And Environments - A Preface

Open Access•John Matthews, John V Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1990

During the 1980s the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initiated a program of joint workshops and cooperative field excursions. The first meeting took place in Calgary, Alberta, in 1984. It dealt with correlation of Quaternary deposits in northwestern North America, but touched on the Tertiary. A second GSC/USGS workshop in early 1987 concerned the Quaternary history of interior basins of Alaska and Canada, b…

  • The Cape Deceit Fauna—Early Pleistocene Mammalian Assemblage from the Alaskan Arctic

Open Access•R Dale Guthrie, John Matthews et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1971

Pleistocene exposures located near Cape Deceit on the south shore of Kotzebue Sound (Alaska) contain a complex sequence of organic sediments which have yielded fossil vertebrates of taxonomic, evolutionary, and zoogeographic significance. Cape Deceit Local Fauna from the Cape Deceit Formation, lowermost of three major stratigraphic units recognized at the site, contains representatives of the genera Canis, Rangifer, Cervus, Ochotona, Lemmus, Micr…
