Geological and biological characterization of the Miramare Marine Protected Area, north-eastern Adriatic Sea (Italy)
Marine protected areas are essential for the conservation of marine environment, biodiversity and geodiversity. Ecosystems are closely linked to the variability of different geological settings and it is important to integrate different data for effective management. To this purpose, geophysical, geological and biological surveys have been carried out in the Miramare Marine Protected Area (north-eastern Adriatic Sea) since 2003 to characterize th…
Late Quaternary transgressions and regressions in the Trieste Gulf (north-eastern Adriatic Sea)
The integration of high-resolution seismic profiles, core data and radiocarbon plus U-Th datings, allows to document the late Quaternary succession of the Trieste Gulf, which represents the easternmost part of the northern Adriatic Sea. This succession consists of an alternation of shallow-marine and continental deposits organized to compose four transgressive-regressive sequences down to ca. 90 m below present sea level. The sequences terminate …
Multicriteria GIS ‐based analysis for the evaluation of the vulnerability of the marine environment in the Gulf of Trieste (north‐eastern Adriatic Sea) for sustainable blue economy and maritime spatia…
The Gulf of Trieste, is a shallow semi‐enclosed sea of about 500 km 2 in the north‐eastern part of the Adriatic Sea. The coastal and marine areas of the Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia, which borders most of the Gulf of Trieste, are subject to significant pressure from human activities, especially in terms of maritime traffic, ports, industry, fishing and tourism. But they are also characterised by natural areas of high environmental value. …
Morphoneotectonics and lithology of the eastern sector of the Gulf of Trieste (NE Italy)
The paper aims to describe and map the geomorphological and lithological features of the Gulf of Trieste and its eastern coasts and to define its neotectonic behaviour by means of the analysis of the morphoneotectonic evidence. The final map, produced at a scale of 1:30,000, shows the outcome of field investigations carried out along the coast and the sea bottom and a detailed geomorphological classification of the coastline. Published and new da…
