  • Structure, evolutionary context and chronological data of the Monforte de Moyuela Roman dam (Ebro Basin, NE of Spain)

    Open Access•José Luis Peña-Monné, Jose Luís Peña‐Monné et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2022•References: 3

The Monforte de Moyuela dam, also known as Ermita de la Virgen del Pilar dam, is a Roman reservoir built on a tributary of the Aguasvivas River (Ebro basin, Spain). A multidisciplinary study has been carried out to investigate this kind of Roman water infrastructure. It is the fifth‐highest dam (16.8 m) in the Iberian Peninsula and the seventh in the Roman Empire. The initial dam was built ca. 100 B.C.–10 A.D., probably in the period of Augustus,…

  • Environmental changes during the Upper Pleistocene–Holocene in Mediterranean NE Spain as recorded by the mineralogy and geochemistry of alluvial records

Joaquín Bastida, María Cinta Osácar et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • Climate and anthropogenic factors affecting alluvial fan development during the late Holocene in the central Ebro Valley, northeast Spain

    Open Access•Ana Constante, José Luis Peña et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 9

The late Holocene in the central Ebro Depression is characterized by a number of morphodynamic stages that affected hillslopes and channels. Climate fluctuations and human activities together caused severe erosion and floods, resulting in alternating stages of accumulation and incision in the valley floors. Seven accumulation levels (N6-N0) correlated with Ebro River fluvial terraces have been identified in the secondary fluvial network of the ce…

  • Alluvial geoarchaeology of an ephemeral stream

    Open Access•Ana Constante, Jose Luís Peña‐Monné et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 9

La Virgen is an ephemeral tributary of the Ebro River in northeast Spain with a complex alluvial sequence. We analyzed alluvial stratigraphy to develop a model of Holocene fluvial evolution for La Virgen and infer causes of floodplain dynamics. Three alluvial terraces were mapped and described using a combination of geoarchaeological and geomorphological techniques. Stratigraphic ages were estimated using 14 C dating and archaeological remains. S…
