Neanderthal hunting grounds
The study of Neanderthal-Environment interactions very often lacks precise data that match the chrono-geographical frame of human activities. Here, we reconstruct Neanderthals’ hunting grounds within three distinct habitats using dental microwear analysis combined with zooarchaeological data. The predation patterns toward ungulates are discussed in term of frequency (NISP/MNI) and potential meat intake (MAM). Unit IIIa of Teixoneres Cave (MIS 3, …
Environmental changes in SW France during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition from the pollen analysis of an eastern North Atlantic deep-sea core
Evaluating synchronies between climate and cultural changes is a prerequisite for addressing the possible effect of environmental changes on human populations. Searching for synchronies during the Middle-Upper Paleolithic transition (ca. 48–36 ka) is hampered by the limits of radiocarbon dating techniques and the large chronological uncertainties affecting the archaeological and paleoclimatic records, as well by their low temporal resolution. Her…
Vegetation and environmental changes at the Middle Stone Age site of Wonderkrater, Limpopo, South Africa
Wonderkrater, a Middle Stone Age site in the interior of South Africa, is a spring and peat mound featuring both paleoclimatic and archaeological records. The site preserves three small MSA lithic assemblages with age estimates of 30 ka, >45 ka and 138.01±7.7 ka. Here we present results of the pollen analysis of a core retrieved from the middle of the peat mound, which covers, with hiatuses, the timespan between ca. 70±10 ka and 30 ka. Pollen per…
The complexity of millennial-scale variability in southwestern Europe during MIS 11
Climatic variability of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11 is examined using a new high-resolution direct land—sea comparison from the SW Iberian margin Site U1385. This study, based on pollen and biomarker analyses, documents regional vegetation, terrestrial climate and sea surface temperature (SST) variability. Suborbital climate variability is revealed by a series of forest decline events suggesting repeated cooling and drying episodes in SW Iberia…
The expansion of Central and Northern European Neolithic populations was associated with a multi-century warm winter and wetter climate
It is still debated whether climate changes had an impact on the emergence, spread, and disappearance of early production-based (Neolithic) adaptations. To date, and despite the incorporation of various paleoclimatic proxies, there exists no spatial reconstruction of the regional impact of the North Atlantic cooling events on Central–Western European climate and environments during the early Holocene. In order to address these two issues, we esti…
Holocene land–sea climatic links on the equatorial Pacific coast (Bay of Guayaquil, Ecuador)
We analyzed the pollen content of a marine core located near the Bay of Guayaquil in Ecuador to document the link between sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and changes in rainfall regimes on the adjacent continent during the Holocene. Based on the expansion/regression of five vegetation types, we observe three successive climatic patterns. In the first phase, between 11,700 and 7700 cal. yr BP, the presence of a cloud (Andean) forest in the mid alt…
Greenland ice sheet melt, changes in oceanic circulation and European climate during the Last Interglacial
Mid-Holocene emergence of a low-frequency millennial oscillation in western Mediterranean climate
The nature and tempo of Holocene climate variability is examined in the record of forest vegetation from western Mediterranean marine core MD95-2043. Episodes of forest decline occurred at 10.1, 9.2, 8.3, 7.4, 5.4–4.5 and 3.7–2.9 cal. ka BP, and between 1.9 cal. ka BP and the top of the record (1.3 cal. ka BP). Wavelet analysis confirms a ~900 yr periodicity prior to and during the early Holocene and the dominance of a ~1750 yr periodicity after …
Millennial-scale variability during the last glacial in vegetation records from Europe
Millennial-scale climate variability and vegetation changes during the Last Glacial
Last glacial fire regime variability in western France inferred from microcharcoal preserved in core MD04-2845, Bay of Biscay
High resolution multiproxy analysis (microcharcoal, pollen, organic carbon, Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (s) , ice rafted debris) of the deep-sea record MD04-2845 (Bay of Biscay) provides new insights for understanding mechanisms of fire regime variability of the last glacial period in western France. Fire regime of western France closely follows Dansgaard–Oeschger climatic variability and presents the same pattern than that of southwestern Iberia…

Orbital- and sub-orbital-scale climate impacts on vegetation of the western Mediterranean basin over the last 48,000 yr
High-resolution pollen analysis of Alborán Sea core MD95-2043 provides a 48-ka continuous vegetation record that can be directly correlated with sea surface and deep-water changes. The reliability of this record is supported by comparison with that of Padul (Sierra Nevada, Spain). Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 was characterised by fluctuations in Quercus forest cover in response to Dansgaard-Oeschger climate variability. MIS 2 was characterised by…
Contrasting impacts of Dansgaard–Oeschger events over a western European latitudinal transect modulated by orbital parameters
Long-term and millennial-scale climate variability in northwestern France during the last 8850 years
Vegetation and quantitative climate reconstructions from a northwestern France shelf core (VK03-58Bis) show orbital and suborbital climate variability for the last 8850 years in this region. A long-term cooling trend in summer temperatures, marked by gradual temperate and humid forest decline, parallels cooling in Greenland and the decrease of mid-latitude summer insolation reduction until at least 2000 cal. yr BP. At the long-term scale, the low…
High-altitude vegetational pattern on the Iberian Mountain Chain (north-central Spain) during the Holocene
Pollen, plant macrofossil. charcoal, sedimentary analyses and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been carried out on a C-14 dated sediment sequence from Las Pardillas Lake (1850 m a.s.l., Iberian Mountain Chain). The interpretation of the pollen diagram has been assisted by the analysis of an altitudinal transect of moss-polsters collected in the same area. After 9310 BP, a Pinus-Betula-Quercus open woodland developed. Between c. 9000 BP a…
