  • Quaternary tephra from the Valles caldera in the volcanic field of the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico identified in western Canada

    Open Access•John A Westgate, Giday Woldegabriel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

A fine-grained, up to 3-m-thick tephra bed in southwestern Saskatchewan, herein named Duncairn tephra (Dt), is derived from an early Pleistocene eruption in the Jemez Mountains volcanic field of New Mexico, requiring a trajectory of northward tephra dispersal of ~1500 km. An unusually low CaO content in its glass shards denies a source in the closer Yellowstone and Heise volcanic fields, whereas a Pleistocene tephra bed (LSMt) in the La Sal Mount…

  • Differentiating the Bishop ash bed and related tephra layers by elemental-based similarity coefficients of volcanic glass shards using solution inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (S-ICP-MS)

    Open Access•Jeffrey R Knott, Andrei M Sarna-Wojcicki et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2007

  • Age and extent of the Ilopango TBJ Tephra inferred from a Holocene chronostratigraphic reference section, Lago De Yojoa, Honduras

    Open Access•Peter J Mehringer, Andrei M Sarna-Wojcicki et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

Eruption of central El Salvador's Ilopango Volcano early in the first millennium A.D. caused death, cultural devastation, and exodus of southern Mesoamericans. It also left a time-stratigraphic marker in western El Salvador and adjacent Guatemala—the Ilopango Tierra Blanca Joven, or TBJ tephra. Mineral suites and major element abundances identify a silicic volcanic ash in cores from Lago de Yojoa, Honduras, as Ilopango TBJ. This extends its repor…

  • A Late Pleistocene Tephra Layer in the Southern Great Basin and Colorado Plateau Derived from Mono Craters, California

    Open Access•David B Madsen, Andrei M Sarna-Wojcicki et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2002

A newly identified tephra in stratified deposits in southwestern Utah, dated ∼14,000 14 C yr B.P., may aid in correlating late Pleistocene deposits across parts of the southern Great Basin and west-central Colorado Plateau. Geochemical analyses of the ash suggest the tephra originated from Mono Craters, California, and most probably correlates with Wilson Creek ash #3. Because the ash is 2 mm thick ∼550 km from its source, the event may have been…

  • Age of the Thornton Beach, California, Mammoth Fossil Updated

    Open Access•Andrei M Sarna-Wojcicki, Andrei M Sarna‐Wojcicki et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1996

  • Correlation of Pliocene and Pleistocene tephra layers between the Turkana Basin of East Africa and the Gulf of Aden

    Open Access•Francis H Brown, Andrei M Sarna-Wojcicki et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1992

  • Correlation of the Rockland Ash Bed, a 400,000-Year-Old Stratigraphic Marker in Northern California and Western Nevada, and Implications for Middle Pleistocene Paleogeography of Central California

    Open Access•Andrei M Sarna-Wojcicki, Andrei M Sarna‐Wojcicki et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1985

Outcrops of an ash bed at several localities in northern California and western Nevada belong to a single air-fall ash layer, the informally named Rockland ash bed, dated at about 400,000 yr B.P. The informal Rockland pumice tuff breccia, a thick, coarse, compound tephra deposit southwest of Lassen Peak in northeastern California, is the near-source equivalent of the Rockland ash bed. Relations between initial thickness of the Rockland ash bed an…
