  • Low‐income and Middle‐class Mothers Gendered Work and Family Schemas

    Open Access•Judith Hennessy•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 14

Conflict between the demands of paid work and motherhood has been studied primarily from the experience of middle‐class and professional mothers in dual‐earner families. Recently, with the reform of welfare, a number of studies have focused on the problems of poor mothers in meeting the demands of paid employment and caring for children. This article explores the moral discourse of judgments about paid work and motherhood and how this differs for…

    Judith Hennessy•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty•2009•Cited by: 9•References: 9

This article sheds light on the work and family lives of those women with greater constraints on their work-life choices than the professional mothers driving the so called opt out revolution. I use qualitative interviews of a diverse group of poor and working class women on and off welfare to examine the issue of choice in work and family life. I find that low-income mothers share much of the concern expressed by social conservatives over mother…

    Open Access•Judith Hennessy•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2009•Cited by: 17•References: 20

Contemporary understandings of work and family are largely based on middle-class women's experience, whereas poverty and welfare researchers focus on the economic struggles of single female-headed families. This qualitative study examines the cultural and moral forces underlying the tension between paid work and family responsibilities through the experience of poor and low-income women. Interview data reveal that as expected, the conditions of p…

    Open Access•Judith Hennessy•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 13

Welfare reform's emphasis on employment and declining caseloads diverts attention from the lack of success experienced by formerly welfare reliant families who participate in paid work. Using data from the 1997 and 1999 National Survey of American Families, this article investigates the effects of participation in paid work for low-income single-parent female-headed families on three important aspects of family well-being: (1) the ability to pay …

  • You've Come a Long Way Baby: Citizens at Conception? Prenatal Personhood and SCHIP Eligibility

    Open Access•Judith Hennessy, Alison Grace Cliath•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2004•References: 12

What are the (un)intended consequences of a citizens at conception policy? This article explores whether redefining a child does indeed spur a material expansion of benefits through the States Children's Insurance Program (SCHIP) or whether this action can be better understood as a struggle over symbolic boundaries of fetal personhood, social boundaries of citizenship, and the attendant challenges to women's reproductive rights
