Reconstruction of the Holocene Paleogeography of Bani Salama, Wadi El‐Natrun, Egypt
Wadi El-Natrun depression lies about 100 km north-west of Cairo, just south of the ‘desert road’ between Cairo and Alexandria. The depression has a longitudinal morphology extending from the southeast to the northwest with average dimensions of about 60 km × 15 km. Bani Salama site lies in the eastern part of the depression, to the east of Fasda Lake, which is located at -27 m below sea level. Based on a geomorphological survey and local archaeol…
Landscape evolution around the oppidum of Bibracte (Northern Massif Central, France) from the Late Iron Age to the Post-Mediaeval period
Fires and human activities as key factors in the high diversity of Corsican vegetation
In the Mediterranean region, Corsica represents one of the most important hotspots of biodiversity, partly due to the high number of endemics species. This region is also one of the most affected by forest fires worldwide. The present vegetation is adapted to a wide range of disturbance regimes, but a change in fire frequency or intensity in the future may severely affect ecological resources and other socio-economical aspects. Here, we study the…
Optimal counting limit for fungal spore abundance estimation using Sporormiella as a case study
Years of vegetation history and land-use changes in the Morvan Mountains (France)
This paper aims to reconstruct the vegetation history of a middle mountain – the Morvan (Burgundy, France) – since the Neolithic (i.e. 7000 years). The results of palynological and non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) analysis performed on 10 peat cores document the main phases of human agro-pastoral practices and natural resources management which drove the formation of the cultural landscape of the Morvan Massif over time. To document the history of …
L’Oppidum de Bibracte (Mont Beuvray, France) Bilan de 10 Annees de Recherches (1996–2005)
This article contains the results of 10 years of research in the Gaulish oppidum of Bibracte between 1996 and 2005. It discusses the thematic developed in Centre archéologique européen of Bibracte in this period. It concerns the natural and human environment, the organisation of the oppidum and the political and economic structures. The palaeoenvironmental analyses have demonstrated the strong impact of human activities, namely of paleometallurgy,…
