Interannual variability of ground surface thermal regimes in Livingston and Deception islands, Antarctica (2007–2021)
The absence of vegetation in most ice‐free areas of Antarctica makes the soil surface very sensitive to atmosphere dynamics, especially in the western sector of the Antarctic Peninsula, an area within the limits of the permafrost zone. To evaluate the possible effects of regional warming on frozen soils, we conducted an analysis of ground surface temperatures (GSTs) from 2007 to 2021 from different monitoring sites in Livingston and Deception isl…
Geomorphology of the Aran Valley (Upper Garonne Basin, Central Pyrenees)
Geomorphological mapping in mountain regions is key for a better understanding of past and present environmental dynamics. Here, we present a 1:25000 scale geomorphological map covering 553 km 2 of the Aran Valley, Upper Garonne Basin (Central Pyrenees). The map identifies 44 different geomorphological units classified under glacial, periglacial, nival, karst, slope, alluvial, and fluvial categories. The area includes geomorphic evidence of past …
Paraglacial slope failures in the Aran valley (Central Pyrenees)
Permafrost is warming at a global scale
Permafrost warming has the potential to amplify global climate change, because when frozen sediments thaw it unlocks soil organic carbon. Yet to date, no globally consistent assessment of permafrost temperature change has been compiled. Here we use a global data set of permafrost temperature time series from the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost to evaluate temperature change across permafrost regions for the period since the Internationa…
Detailed geomorphological mapping with Kinematic GPS. Examples from Livingston Island, Antarctic
The detailed geomorphological mapping of landforms and deposits is widespread in Quaternary geomorphology studies. It consists on the precise representation of the spatial position of geomorphological information and their characterization (e.g. topography, hydrology, morphometry, morphography, morphogenesis, morphochronology and morphodynamics) in large-scale maps (usually 1:5,000 to 1:25,000).The data is collectcd using both remote sensing (aeri…
Present-day hydro-aeolian processes in the Serra do Gerês, NW Portugal
Micro-scale fcatures developed in coarse sand deposits present in the higher interfluves of the Serra do Gerês are studied. Two main types of features were identified: simple lag-surfaces and microaccumulations against obstacles. A morphological typology for the later is presented. The morphological study, grain-size analysis and comparison of the aspeet and location of the micro-accumulations against obstacles with shrub anemomorphisms allowed a…
No vale do…
