Slavic languages are Type 3 languages: Replies
Slavic languages – “SVO” languages without SVO qualities
Slavic languages are commonly classified as SVO languages, with an exceptional property, though, namely an atypically extensive variability of word order. A systematic comparison of Slavic languages with uncontroversial SVO languages reveals, however, that exceptional properties are the rule. Slavic languages are ‘exceptional’ in so many syntactic respects that SVO appears to be a typological misnomer. This fact invites a fresh look. Upon closer …
A null theory of scrambling
Grammars are decomposable. On the one hand, an adequate characterization of a given utterance factorizes the contributions of each subsystem of grammar and on the other hand, it thereby reduces the apparent overall complexity to the interaction of less complex subsystems. Scrambling is an apt showcase. Its complicated properties are not inherent properties of a syntactic construction but the result of the interaction of phrase structuring with ot…
Mittelfeld Phenomena: Scrambling in Germanic
Mittelfeld (MF; literally, ‘mid‐field’) is a handy, theory‐neutral, descriptive term for addressing the non‐peripheral portion of an OV‐type clause, that is, a clause with a head‐final VP. MF refers to what is in between the clause‐initial C‐position and the clause‐final V‐positions. MF phenomena are clause‐internal phenomena since the left and the right boundaries belong to the same simple clause structure. The MF core issues are (i) the seriali…
Quantifying kids prefer intersecting sets – a pilot study
Children between approximately four and five years of age are known to fail in picture matching tasks with verbal stimuli presenting an existentially quantified object NP in the scope of a universally quantified subject NP. In this paper, we suggest an experimentally tested provisional answer to a question that has not been asked in any previous work on the very phenomenon: Would they also fail for the truth-conditionally equivalent stimuli in wh…
Representation and Derivation in the Theory of Grammar
Grammatische Illusionen – Lokal wohlgeformt – global deviant
Grammatical illusions are linguistic equivalents of optical illusions in visual processing. A grammatical illusion amounts to an expression that is judged acceptable in spite of its grammatical deviance. It is the hitherto insufficiently appreciated fourth “aggregate state”, that completes the set of four logical pairings of the properties “(un-)grammatical” and “(un-)acceptable”. A typical source of syntactic illusions is the mental processor's …
The Syntax of German
What do you know, if you know that a language has 'Object Verb' structure rather than 'Verb Object'? Answering this question and many others, this book provides an essential guide to the syntactic structure of German. It examines the systematic differences between German and English, which follow from this basic difference in sentence structure, and presents the main results of syntactic research on German. Topics covered include the strict word …

Extended phases & beheaded phrases Comments on Marcel den Dikken's ‘Phase Extension’
Phrases cease to be phases once the head raises out of the phrase. This is a clear claim. So, in the simplest case, one would expect a direct correlation between overt head-movement and phrasal transparency properties for extraction constructions in typical cases of head-movement, as for instance V movement
As a matter of facts – comments on Featherston's sticks and carrots
It is easy to agree and equally easy to disagree with the two main positions of Sam Featherston, respectively, namely, that grammar theory would benefit from improving standards of data assessment, and, that syntactic well-formedness is inherently gradient rather than dichotomist. I subscribe to the first position and I see good grounds for not subscribing to the second claim. Since the two positions are dependent, denying the second has implicat…
Pre- and postverbal adverbials in OV and VO
Scrambling: Nontriggered Chain Formation in OV Languages
In this paper we argue for the following properties of clause-bound scrambling, as they are manifested in German. First, scrambling presupposes head-final projections. Only selected constituents, notably arguments, scramble, the reason being that phrases selected by a head have a unique base order. Second, scrambling involves antecedent-gap dependencies with A-chain properties. Third, scrambling is overt and non-string-vacuous. Fourth, scrambling…
Adverb Placement - Convergence of Structure and Licensing
This contribution addresses the following issues: i) the structural identification of adverb positions (adjoined, embedded or in Spec-positions); ii) interface conditions for adverbs (syntax-semantic interface); iii) serialization patterns of adverbs (post- vs. pre-head order). First, it is argued that important empirical generalizations are missed if adverbials are assigned to spec-positions of functional heads. This paper defends the claim that…
