Graphotactics of Portuguese Tonic and Oral Mid-Vowels
A long-standing problem in Portuguese linguistics has been the extent to which descriptions assigning closed or open status to non-diacritic-bearing tonic oral (TO) mid-vowels e and o can be produced, as well as what should be the nature of such descriptions. By employing a corpus that consists of all the 6,329 TO-mid-vowelcontaining lemmas that appear in a prominent Brazilian dictionary, the present synchronic study compares its findings to prev…

Spanish Speakers Semi- and Residually Native
The sociolinguistic realities of a varyingly bilingual international metropolitan area such as El Paso, Texas/Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua are complex,1 and this complexity is inevitably reflected in the linguistic profiles of students enrolling in Spanish courses at a large (ca. 15,000), essentially open-admission and overwhelmingly commuter-student institution such as the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), whose enrollment patterns (ca. 55% Mex…

Spanish Orthography, Morphology and Syntax for Bilingual Educators
Which Method and for How Long
One important issue confronting language educators today is not Which single method is best?, but, rather, Which of several methods are best employed at what stages of teaching/learning process? Thus it is not a question of whether James Asher's Total Physical Response (TPR) is superior to Tracy Terrell's Natural Approach (or whether either of these is superior, or inferior, to Canadianstyle immersion education, audiolingualism, grammar-translati…
Bilingual Communities
From the vantage point of August 1, 1985, the past three years are better characterized by what has failed to happen, politically, in realms directly affecting the concerns of applied linguistics in the United States than by what actually has happened. Despite 55 months of the Reagan Revolution, the Department of Education is still intact, and, with it, the Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages Affairs (OBEMLA). Bilingual education…

Statistics on Morphological Irregularity in Spanish Verb Tenses
tense seems to be at the heart of the terminological problem. The fundamental value, the essential meaning, of a verb tense is specified as the value that characterizes invariably all of its uses, regardless of whether those uses are absolute or relative, main or secondary, fixed or variable, etc. The name of each tense must reflect exclusively that unifying fundamental value. The unifying fundamental value that characterizes the cardinal tense i…

Unitary Placement Testing for Spanish
The article responds affirmatively to the question its title poses. A single testing instrument can indeed adequately place and evaluate native speakers of Spanish and non‐native learners alike, provided that it incorporates various special features found in the two tests analyzed here—the Parisi Spanish Proficiency Test (PSPT), developed at Georgetown University, and the Examen de colocación en español (EdCE), produced at the University of Texas…

The International Bilingual City
Can language departments in schools on the U.S.‐Mexico border take advantage of bilingual situations, expanding their programs through a creative serving of diverse publics, or must they be constrained by cross‐ethnic taboos and restrictive local “rules of speaking”? These and kindred questions are addressed in this essay, which, following a sociolinguistic description of the El Paso‐Ciudad Juarez metropolitan area, relates how placement tests, m…
