  • Psychometric Evaluation of the Norwegian Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale in a Multi‐Site Sample of Patients With Personality Disorders and Personality Problems

Open Access•Geir Pedersen, Benjamin Hummelen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Clinical Psychology•2026

OBJECTIVE: The validity and psychometric qualities of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) in populations with a broader range of personality disorders (PDs) are still unclear. The aim of the current study was to analyze the factor structure and validity of DERS and two of its short-forms (DERS-SF and DERS-18), their relation to PD features and personality functioning, gender differences, and the overlap between concepts of alexith…

  • Seismic surveys and the role of scientific advice in Norway

Open Access•Lise Doksæter Sivle, Tonje N Forland et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2025

Geophysical surveys using airguns are used for both oil and gas exploration and site assessments for offshore wind development. These airguns generate intense sound which may disturb marine mammals and fish. Norwegian petroleum resources are located on the continental shelf, with ∼60–80 seismic surveys annually. These same waters are crucial spawning grounds for numerous fish populations, support a diverse marine mammal community, and underpin ma…

  • Improvement of alexithymia in patients treated in mental health services for personality disorders

Open Access•Hanna Sayar, Theresa Wilberg et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Alexithymia is a common problem among patients with PDs and is associated with mental health difficulties and psychosocial dysfunction, with rates varying across PD type and severity. The study demonstrates moderate improvement of alexithymia during treatment in specialized PD mental health services. Further research should evaluate the effectiveness of different treatments and interventions in reducing alexithymia among PD patients

  • Evaluating the Construct Validity of the Norwegian Version of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale – Brief Form 2.0 in a Large Clinical Sample

    Open Access•Muirne C S Paap, Geir Pedersen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality Assessment•2024

The Level of Personality Functioning - Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0) is a 12-item self-report questionnaire developed to gain a quick impression of the severity of personality pathology according to the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD). The current study evaluated the construct validity and reliability of the Norwegian version of the LPFS-BF 2.0 in a large clinical sample (N = 1673). Dimensionality was examined using confir…

  • Countertransference, alliance, and outcome in the treatment of patients with personality disorder

Open Access•Reidun Øvstebø, Geir Pedersen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

The study demonstrates significant associations between negative CTs and lower patient-rated WAI in the early phase of therapy, and a development of increasingly more negative CTs during therapy in treatments which were not completed according to schedule. The results indicate high clinical relevance of monitoring therapeutic relationships in PD treatments. Further research on the emotional and relational quality of psychotherapeutic relationship…

  • Minding mentalizing - convergent validity of the Mentalization Breakdown Interview

Open Access•Dag Anders Ulvestad, Merete Selsbakk Johansen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

    ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT04157907

  • The Incremental Utility of Criteria A and B of the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders for Predicting DSM-IV/DSM-5 Section II Personality Disorders

Open Access•Tor E Nysæter, Benjamin Hummelen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality Assessment•2023

The DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) includes two main criteria: moderate or greater impairment in personality functioning (Criterion A) and the presence of one or more pathological personality traits (Criterion B). The aim of the study was to investigate the incremental utility of Criteria A and B for predicting DSM-5 Section II personality disorders (PD). The sample (N = 317) consisted of three well-defined groups: non-c…

  • Combined group and individual therapy for patients with avoidant personality disorder—A pilot study

Open Access•Theresa Wilberg, Geir Pedersen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

This pilot study shows promising results for combined group- and individual therapy for AvPD patients with moderate to severe impairment. Larger scale studies should be conducted to increase empirically based knowledge to guide development of differentiated treatments adapted to patients' various levels of AvPD severity and profiles of personality dysfunction

  • Mental health disorders, functioning and health-related quality of life among extensively hospitalized patients due to severe self-harm – results from the Extreme Challenges project

Open Access•Tuva Langjord, Geir Pedersen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

The study reveals that severe self-harm inpatients have complex psychopathology and highlights the importance of individualized and thorough assessment among patients with severe and/or repetitive self-harm

  • Improvement of personality functioning among people treated within personality disorder mental health services. A longitudinal, observational study

Open Access•Elfrida Hartveit Kvarstein, Mathias Frøyhaug et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Personality functioning improved across PD conditions. The results highlight BPD improvements. The study points to challenges concerning AvPD treatment, poor occupational activity and age-related differences

  • Social Cognition Capacities as Predictors of Outcome in Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT)

Open Access•Elfrida Hartveit Kvarstein, Espen Jan Folmo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

This study demonstrates considerable variation of social cognitive capacity among BPD patients and good outcomes for patients with mainly ToM errors of hypermentalizing. It also indicates that poorly responding patients may represent a cohort with more complex problems of social cognition and insufficient mentalizing

  • A multi-center psychometric evaluation of the Severity Indices of Personality Problems 118 (Sipp-118)

    Open Access•Muirne C S Paap, Benjamin Hummelen et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2020

Purpose The Severity Indices of Personality Problems 118 (SIPP-118) is a self-report questionnaire that aims to measure core components of (mal)adaptive personality functioning that can change over time. In this study, we aimed to assess the facet strength of the 16 facets across three large clinical samples. Methods Data from Norwegian and Dutch psychiatric patients were analyzed in this international multi-center study (N 1 = 2814, N 2 = 4751, …

  • Symptoms of Eating Disorders Among Females in Drug Addiction Treatment

Heid Nøkleby, Geir Pedersen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Work Practice…•2014

The aim of this study is to measure and describe symptoms of eating disorders among females in treatment for drug addiction in Norway. Previous clinical and epidemiological studies have revealed coprevalence between eating disorders and substance use or abuse. However, few studies have measured eating disorders in drug-using samples and even fewer within the context of drug treatment. In this study, 29 females with drug use disorder in residentia…
