  • What’s the cost of mastery? Flemish Primitives and the labour behind the myth of Flemish dance

Open Access•Ari Van Assche, Annelies Van Assche•ARTICLE•Theatre Research International•2026

This article examines how Flemish Primitives (2022), by Chokri Ben Chikha and his company Action Zoo Humain, interrogates artistic mastery in contemporary dance from Flanders. Framed as a satirical talent show in which six dancers with migrant and diasporic backgrounds compete to become the next Flemish Master, the performance revisits the legacy of the ‘Flemish (Dance) Wave’ while exposing the labour structures that sustain its myth. • (Un)Teaching the Canon. An Approach to Teaching Dance History in Western Europe

Open Access•Ari Van Assche, Annelies Van Assche•ARTICLE•Dance Research•2025

This article examines the challenges and possibilities of teaching dance history in Western Europe through a pedagogical approach that both teaches and unteaches the canon. Drawing on my experiences as a dance history lecturer, I explore how such engagement with the canon enables students to develop essential skills in performance analysis. Through discussion of historiographical critiques, contemporary performances, and pedagogical strategies, I…

  • Flexible Performativity

Open Access•Ari Van Assche, Annelies Van Assche et al.•ARTICLE•TDR/The Drama Review•2023

Flexible performativity and its characteristics of negotiating proximity, autodramaturgy, hyperindividualism, and hyperreferentialism mold the dancer prototypical of the movement logics of the early 21st century

  • Cruel Optimism, Ironic Pessimism, Poetic Terrorism

Open Access•Ari Van Assche, Annelies Van Assche•ARTICLE•TDR/The Drama Review•2021

Meyoucycle (2016) was the eagerly awaited result of a collaboration between choreographer Eleanor Bauer and composer Chris Peck. The characters of this dance and song–cycle have developed tactics to withstand the exploitative demands of neoliberal semiocapitalism; the creative team deployed performative and dramaturgical tactics for the same purpose

  • Mayday, Mayday, Mayday! Moving from European Discourses on the Precarious and Art to the Realities of Contemporary Dance

Open Access•Ari Van Assche, Annelies Van Assche et al.•ARTICLE•Dance Research•2019

In this article, we encapsulate several key debates in sociology, cultural and arts politics and the media industry on precarious work since its emergence at the turn of the twenty-first century. After setting out the fundamental discourses on precarity, we concentrate on contemporary dance artists as precarious workers and investigate the extent to which different levels of precarity affect them, distinguishing relevant aspects related to socio-…
