Response to Patrick Colm Hogan’s Article on Literary Universals and Culture
If I have understood him correctly, Professor Hogan argues that certain basic story forms—“prototypes” or “genres”—are universal, or at least cross-culturally common, that characters in stories pursue goals, that the goals are determined by emotions that act as motives, that such motives are “largely innate,” and that to explain stories, we need to stipulate the emotional functions that stories fulfill for readers. If these are indeed claims that…
Narrative Theory and Neuroscience
Stories and the Brain: The Neuroscience of Narrative by Paul B. Armstrong and Brain, Mind, and the Narrative Imagination by Christopher Comer and Ashley Taggart adopt cultural constructivist perspectives that reject the idea of evolved human motives and emotions. Both books contain information that could be integrated with other research in a comprehensive and empirically grounded theory of narrative, but they both fail to construct any such theo…
Narrative Theory and Neuroscience
These two books on fictional narratives and neuroscience adopt cultural constructivist perspectives that reject the idea of evolved human motives and emotions. Both books contain information that could be integrated with other research in a comprehensive and empirically grounded theory of narrative, but they both fail to construct any such theory. In order to avoid subordinating the humanities to the sciences, Comer and Taggart avoid integrating …
Angus Fletcher’s Other Literary Darwinism
Angus Fletcher pitches his book to general readers. Though it consists of literary criticism, it is designed as a psychological self-help manual-literature as therapy. Fletcher's therapeutic program is presented as an alternative to the kind of literary Darwinism that identifies human nature as the basis for literature. He acknowledges the existence of human nature but aims at transcending it by promoting an Aquarian ethos of harmony and under…
Evolutionary Perspectives on Imaginative Culture
This volume offers an introduction to the relatively new field of evolutionary studies in imaginative culture, analyzing the evolved human imagination. Contributors from psychology, neuroscience, anthropology, and the humanities demonstrate that imagination is an essential part of human nature.
Characterizing Current Attitudes and Practices for Human Subject Safety in Studies Involving Pupil Dilation
Standards in pupil dilation practices regarding the safety of human subjects are not present in vision research despite the potential for significant adverse effects. We developed two surveys to examine current practices around pupil dilation among vision researchers and individuals associated with oversight of human subjects research. While both groups note an absence of adverse events associated with pupil dilation, vision researcher practices …
Evolutionary Perspectives on Imaginative Culture
A Cross-Disciplinary Survey of Beliefs about Human Nature, Culture, and Science
How far has the Darwinian revolution come? To what extent have evolutionary ideas penetrated into the social sciences and humanities? Are the “science wars” over? Or do whole blocs of disciplines face off over an unbridgeable epistemic gap? To answer questions like these, contributors to top journals in 22 disciplines were surveyed on their beliefs about human nature, culture, and science. More than 600 respondents completed the survey. Scoring p…

Evolutionary approaches to literature and drama
Reintroduced into philosophical parlance by Edward Wilson, the term ‘consilience’ denotes that nature forms a unified field of determinate causal relations and that all fields of knowledge are thus integrally connected — including literature, drama, and the other arts. The common designation for that species-typical configuration — both in literary tradition and in evolutionary psychology — is ‘human nature’. Like most traditional literary theori…

Three Scenarios for Literary Darwinism
Three Scenarios for Literary Darwinism Joseph Carroll (bio) Introduction: The Once and Future Discipline Thirty years ago, the idea of creating a specifically evolutionary theory of literature would scarcely have seemed imaginable and would certainly not have seemed within the range of practical possibility. Nonetheless, over the past fifteen years, "literary Darwinists" have been making rapid progress in integrating literary study with the evolu…

The Ecology of Victorian Fiction
In the past ten years or so, ecological literary criticism--that is, criticism concentrating on the relationship between literature and the natural environment--has become one of the fastest-growing areas in literary study. Ecocritics now have their own professional association, their own academic journal, and an impressive bibliography of scholarly studies. Ecocritical scholars divide their attention between "nature writing" and ecological theme…

Development of the Inventario de Comportamiento Escolar (Idce) for Puerto Rican Children
The Inventario de Comportamiento Escolar (IDCE) is a teacher rating inventory for the assessment of Puerto Rican children, particularly those with a behavior pattern indicative of attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, or academic underachievement. Factor analysis of classroom behavior ratings of a representative sample of 961 Puerto Rican students (kindergarten to sixth grade) yielded five scales: Inattention, Hyperactivity, Inapprop…
The lntergenerational transmission of family violence
This paper examines the contention that family violence is passed down from generation to generation. The sample was primarily nonclinical and was composed of 14 clients of community guidance clinics and 82 members of a randomly selected control group. The primary hypothesis that individuals who are exposed to a high degree of physical punishment as children are more likely to resort to family violence as adults was supported. Studies of the mode…
