Super Storm Desmond: A process-based assessment
Super' Storm Desmond broke meteorological and hydrological records during a record warm year in the British-Irish Isles (BI). The severity of the storm may be a harbinger of expected changes to regional hydroclimate as global temperatures continue to rise. Here, we adopt a process-based approach to investigate the potency of Desmond, and explore the extent to which climate change may have been a contributory factor. Through an Eulerian assessment…

Parent-Child Interaction in Transition
In this essay collection, a variety of authorities explore the significance of parent-child interaction and its implications for all stages of family life. Numerous aspects of this socialization process in changing societies throughout the world are represented, for relatively uniform societies, such as in Western Europe; multicultural societies, such as in North America; and traditional societies facing the impact of modernization or Westernizat…

Religiosity and Premarital Sexual Permissiveness: Reexamination of Reiss's Traditionalism Proposition

A Scale of Preadolescent Heterosexual Development
A five-item Guttman scale of social heterosexuality was developed in a sample of 1,029 ten-, eleven-, and twelve-year-olds in Pennsylvania. Since the theory of a sequence of developmental stages makes the same requirements of items as does a Guttman scale, it was suggested that these items represented a series of steps in the development of normal heterosexuality at these ages. The study was replicated with a sample of 610 children of the same ag…

"Reaction to "Familial Development, Selective Needs, and Predictive Theory
THE CONTRIBUTION made by Dr. Kirkpatrick's paper, it seemed to me in studying it, was largely masked by the symbolic system in which he chose to express it. At the risk of being presumptuous, I should like, therefore, to begin my reaction to his paper by a restatement of some of the key points in his presentation. The first task of conceptual models is to sensitize the student to the most significant dimensions or aspects of the phenomena to be s…

Level of Sexual Experience and Predicted Adjustment in Marriage
This study of 80 virgin, 40 sexually active non-orgastic, and 40 sexutally active orgastic college girls supports the previously reported low positive relationship between virginity and predicted marital happiness as well as predicted sexual adjustment. Among the non-virgins there was little difference in the marital happiness or sexual adjustment scores of the orgastic and non-orgastic girls. It is suggested that specific sexual attitudes and ex…

Sexual Behavior Among Pre‐adolescents
It is a part of popular belief about the sexual instinct that it is absent in childhood and that it first appears in the period of life known as puberty. This, though a common error, is serious in its consequences and is chiefly due to our ignorance of the fundamental principles of the sexual life

Social Heterosexual Development among Urban Negroes and Whites
Social heterosexual development during preand early adolescence was examined with a questionnaire and derived index of social heterosexuality which permitted interracial comparisons by sex and age. The most striking difference between the races occurred during the preadolescent and pubescence ages of 10-13. At these ages, the white children showed the traditional pattern: girls were far more romantically oriented than boys although at about the s…

Family-Life Education versus Reality
EXPONENTS of family-life education generally defend their field against its critics by pointing out the great urgency of equipping young people to cope intelligently with the many challenges which choosing a mate and establishing a family will shortly press upon them. By giving students more accurate information and by helping them to explore the value of various alternatives, the family-living teacher hopes to give them a more realistic and matu…
