  • Soome-ugri kogemus ja kohanemine. Saatesõna

    Open Access•A Leete, Laur Vallikivi•ARTICLE•Keel ja Kirjandus•2026

This article examines how long-term colonial domination shapes attitudes toward war, violence, and the state among Nenets reindeer herders in the European tundra and the Polar Urals. Drawing on historical sources, contemporary media, open-source data on wartime casualties and mobilization, and long-term ethnographic fieldwork among private reindeer-herding families (2000–2017), I trace changes in relations between Nenets and lutsa – a term referr…

This special issue addresses the religion of the Finno-Ugric peoples, with a specific focus on animist religiosity and its contemporary expression in Finno-Ugric societies.*This is a subject that has recently featured prominently in significant forums, and this collection of papers is particularly influenced by discussions at two major conferences: the Congress of the European Association for the Study of Religions (EASR) in Cork in June 2022, an…

  • Buying a God in Paris: Cultural Hybridity in the Thinking of Yuri Vella, Forest Nenets Intellectual

Open Access•E Toulouze, Liivo Niglas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2022

This paper analyses highly creative and hybrid practices which tie the Indigenous Siberian, European Christian and Soviet worlds in unexpected ways. Reflecting on the Forest Nenets reindeer herder, poet and intellectual Yuri Vella’s understanding of the religious, the authors discuss an episode of turning an icon-like painting of Madonna with Child into a Nenets ‘god’. This took place in Paris half a year before Yuri’s death. First, we present hi…

  • Forum: The Material Turn and the Anthropology of Religion

Evgeniia Abroskina, Yulia Antonyan et al.•ARTICLE•Antropologicheskij forum•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 21

Material religion" as a research program is a relatively new development in the study of religion in the social sciences and humanities. Though this approach has its own forerunners and predecessors, one can argue that it took shape in the wake of an epistemological critique of social and cultural anthropology which treated religion as embedded in the cognitive and psychological experiences of a human being. Accordingly, the material manifestatio…

  • “We Cannot Pray Without Kumyshka ”: Alcohol in Udmurt Ritual Life

Open Access•E Toulouze, Laur Vallikivi•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2021

We trace the history of the uses of the alcoholic drink known as kumyshka among the Udmurt. Our focus is on kumyshka ’s ritual uses both in public and domestic contexts in the second half of the 19th century, the early 20th century as well as the early 21st century. We suggest that kumyshka not only represents a site of resistance to the dominant religious regime, i.e. Russian Orthodoxy, but is also a tool for self-enhancement and identity making…

  • The Rebirth of a People: Reincarnation Cosmology among the Tundra Yukaghir of the Lower Kolyma, Northeast Siberia

    Laur Vallikivi, Lena Sidorova•ARTICLE•Arctic Anthropology•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 5

We focus on Tundra Yukaghir reincarnation cosmology and its workings in the current ethnic revival by examining rebirth accounts from the Lower Kolyma. In Sovietized Siberia, the atheist state fought against everything that was “religious” and thus contributed to the wane of reincarnation ideology and related ritual practices. In addition, the state suppressed a distinct Yukaghir ethnicity it had partly constructed itself. In the 1990s, rebirth r…

  • Conversion after socialism: Disruptions, modernisms and technologies of faith in the former Soviet Union

Ludek Broz, William Clark et al.•BOOK•Conversion after Socialism•2009

The large and sudden influx of missionaries into the former Soviet Union after seventy years of militant secularism has been controversial, and the widespread occurrence of conversion has led to anxiety about social and national disintegration. Although these concerns have been vigorously discussed in national arenas, social scientists have remained remarkably silent about the subject. This volume’s focus on conversion offers a novel approach to …
