The Effect of Older Siblings on Language Development as a Function of Age Difference and Sex
The number of older siblings a child has is negatively correlated with the child’s verbal skills, perhaps because of competition for parents’ attention. In the current study, we examined the role of siblings’ sex and age gap as moderating factors, reasoning that they affect older siblings’ tendency to compensate for reduced parental attention. We hypothesized that children with an older sister have better language abilities than children with an …
Personality and the Risk of Cancer
OBJECTIVE: Large-scale prospective studies do not support an association between neuroticism and extroversion with cancer incidence. However, research on other personality constructs is inconclusive. This longitudinal study examined the associations between four personality measures, Type 1, "suppressed emotional expression"; Type 5, "rational/antiemotional"; hostility; and Type A with cancer incidence. METHODS: Personality measures were availabl…
Contribution of lifetime smoking habit in France and Northern Ireland to country and socioeconomic differentials in mortality and cardiovascular incidence
BACKGROUND: This study examines the contribution of lifetime smoking habit to the socioeconomic gradient in all-cause and smoking-related mortality and in cardiovascular incidence in two countries. METHODS: 10,600 men aged 50-59 years were examined in 1991-4 in centres in Northern Ireland and France and followed annually for 10 years. Deaths and cardiovascular events were documented. Current smoking habit, lifetime smoking (pack-years) and other …
Downward trends in the prevalence of childhood overweight in the setting of 12-year school- and community-based programmes
Objective A school-based nutrition information programme was initiated in 1992 in two towns in northern France (Fleurbaix and Laventie, FL) and was followed by a number of community-based interventions. We took the opportunity to measure the outcomes in terms of childhood obesity and overweight over the next 12 years. Design Repeated, cross-sectional, school-based survey. For the school years beginning in 1992, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004, the heig…
Type A behaviour and consumption of an atherogenic diet
High consumptions of grain, fish, dairy products and combinations of these are associated with a low prevalence of metabolic syndrome
Objective: To analyse the relation between various food groups and the frequency of insulin resistance syndrome (IRS). Design: A sample of 912 men aged 45–64 years was randomly selected. Questionnaires on risk factors and a three consecutive day food diary were completed. Height, weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure were measured. A fasting blood sample was analysed for lipid and glucose measurements. The NCEP-ATP-III definition was us…

Anxiety But Not Depression Is Associated With Elevated Blood Pressure in a Community Group of French Elderly
OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether anxiety and depression were independently associated with elevated blood pressure in elderly persons. METHOD: The study group consisted of 1389 subjects aged 59 to 71 years recruited from the electoral rolls of the city of Nantes (France). Subjects completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D) and the Spielberger Inventory scales to assess depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms, r…
Is hospital care involved in inequalities in coronary heart disease mortality? Results from the French WHO-Monica Project in men aged 30-64
OBJECTIVES: The goal of the study was to assess whether possible disparities in coronary heart disease (CHD) management between occupational categories (OC) in men might be observed and contribute to the increasing inequalities in CHD morbidity and mortality reported in France. METHODS: The data from the three registers of the French MONICA Collaborative Centres (MCC-Lille, MCC-Strasbourg, and MCC-Toulouse) were analysed during two period: 1985-8…

Family resemblance in body circumferences and their ratios
The purpose of this study was to investigate the familial resemblance for individual body circumferences (suprailiac, waist, thigh and arm) and for the waist/suprailiac (as surrogate for the waist/hip) and the waist/thigh circumference ratios, in a sample of 216 unselected nuclear families with children aged 10-25 years. Familial correlations were jointly computed, using the maximum-likelihood method. The highest familial resemblance was observed…
The Paris Cardiovascular Risk Factor Prevention Trial. Effects of two years of intervention in a population of young men
The Paris Cardiovascular Risk Factor Prevention Trial was designed to determine whether individualised intervention could induce a reduction in the coronary risk factor levels in young men. Three thousand three hundred and thirty-six men aged 25 to 35, working in the 160 sections of a large Parisian administration, were examined. The section were randomly allocated to a control and an intervention group. Advice concerning diet, cigarette smoking,…
Reproducibility of analysis of the electrocardiogram in epidemiology using the 'Minnesota code
Groupe d'Etude sur I'Epidemiologic de I'Atherosclirose, 27 rue Lacordaire, Paris 15 ime Use of the electrocardiogram is necessary to advance knowledge of the epidemiology of ischae mic heart disease. Analysis of the electrocardio gram in epidemiological practice, however, may be difficult since the clinical method of interpretation
