  • GPT-4o reads the mind in the eyes

    Open Access•James W A Strachan, Oriana Pansardi et al.•ARTICLE•Computers in Human Behavior•2026

Humans possess a sophisticated ability to read the mind in the eyes of other people. Here we tested whether this ability is also present in GPT-4o, a multimodal LLM. Using two versions of a widely used theory of mind test, the Reading the Mind in Eyes Test and the Multiracial Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, we found that GPT-4o outperformed humans in extracting mentalistic information from upright faces but underperformed humans when faces wer…

  • ‘Funny’ Politics

Open Access•Keya Saxena, Sylvester Senyo Ofori-Parku•ARTICLE•Journal of Creative Communications•2024

This study hypothesised that (a) exposure to online comedy about political issues promotes public engagement, critical thinking, and opinion sharing; (b) the relationship between exposure to online comedy and the dependent variables is mediated by self-perception of critical thinking on religious freedom (as an example of social justice issues); and (c) the relationship between online comedy and dependent variables (perception of public engagemen…

  • The Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act 2023

    Open Access•Keya Saxena, K B Saxena•ARTICLE•Social Change•2024•References: 1

In order to check the increasing diversion of forest land for non-forest purposes, the Government of India enacted the Forest Conservation Act (FCA) 1980 which mandated the central government’s prior approval for any such diversions. This Act applied to land notified as forest under the Indian Forest Act 1927 or any other law, and the forest under the control of the forest department. The Supreme Court order in Godavarman Case (1996) expanded the…

  • Testing theory of mind in large language models and humans

    Open Access•James W A Strachan, Dalila Albergo et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 54

At the core of what defines us as humans is the concept of theory of mind: the ability to track other people's mental states. The recent development of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT has led to intense debate about the possibility that these models exhibit behaviour that is indistinguishable from human behaviour in theory of mind tasks. Here we compare human and LLM performance on a comprehensive battery of measurements that aim to …

  • That’s a ‘Sign’

    Open Access•Keya Saxena•ARTICLE•Communication Studies•2023

India witnessed massive rallies and protest marches in response to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), a controversial 2019–2020 legislation that grants citizenship to all migrants except Muslims coming illegally from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. As people turned to creative means of voicing their opinions, placards became important tools of questioning the government and the bill. Based on framing and the vernacular rhetoric of social…

  • The Truth Project

    Open Access•D M Markowitz, K G Blackburn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2022•References: 37

The United States Constitution grants Americans the “right to a speedy and public trial,” with an assumption that the trial is impartial and fair. Recent data suggest a nontrivial number of cases fail to meet this standard. During interrogations, suspects can be presented with false evidence, long interrogations can undermine a suspect’s cognitive ability, and minimization tactics often mislead suspects into believing justice is on their side. Th…

  • Compensatory Afforestation Fund Act and Rules

    Open Access•Keya Saxena, K B Saxena•ARTICLE•Social Change•2019•Cited by: 1

Compensatory afforestation means the afforestation of plantations of an equivalent area of non-forest land or of double the area of degraded notified forest to compensate for the loss of forests diverted for development activities. The user of this diverted forest is required to pay its ‘net present value’ to the forest department for this purpose. On the direction of the Supreme Court, a law has been enacted and rules framed to manage the money …

  • Trade in Health Services Implications for People’s Health

    Open Access•Keya Saxena, K B Saxena•ARTICLE•Social Change•2011•References: 6

The neo-liberal transformation of global economy has brought in a new trade regime replacing GATT 1947 with incorporation of services and intellectual property in the products to be exchanged and WTO as its powerful regulator. Health being one of the services has become tradable for the first time. India has chosen to engage in health trade substantially to drive economic benefits from medical tourism, export of pharmaceuticals and manpower, and …

  • Development, displacement, and resistance

    Open Access•Keya Saxena, K B Saxena•ARTICLE•Social Change•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 2

Peasants across the country are opposing development projects which displaced them from their land, habitat, livelihood and environment. They are questioning the paradigm of development itself which is so heavily loaded against them. The law on land acquisition is central to the understanding of this hostility to development. Their resistance is rooted in the conceptual frame and design of the land acquisition act which empowers the government to…
