Chimwemwe Phiri•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the history of medicine•2025

This article examines the specific uses and meanings of medical photographs depicting skin color variation produced by Dr. Hugh Stannus Stannus in early twentieth-century colonial Malawi. In this paper, we argue that in order to produce caring research, the wellbeing of researchers must not be neglected. Using our experiences as three doctoral researchers undertaking ethnographic fieldwork during the pandemic, we consider what it means to do research which has a ‘praxis of care’ at it…

We describe the development, implementation and mixed methods evaluation of a mobile health (mHealth) triage algorithm based on the WHO Emergency, Triage, Assessment, and Treatment (ETAT) for primary-level care. We conducted an observational study design of implementation research. Key stakeholders were engaged throughout implementation.…

The diminishing effectiveness of antimicrobials raises serious concerns for human health. While policy makers grapple to reduce the overuse of antimicrobial medicines to stem the rise of antimicrobial resistance, insufficient attention has been paid to how this applies to low-resource contexts. We provide an in-depth portrayal of antimicrobial prescribing at primary health care level in rural Chikwawa District, Malawi. Ethnographic fieldwork took…
