Charting brain functional development from birth to 6 years of age
Early childhood is crucial for brain functional development. Using advanced neuroimaging methods, characterizing functional connectivity has shed light on the developmental process in infants. However, insights into spatiotemporal functional maturation from birth to early childhood are substantially lacking. In this study, we aggregated 1,091 resting-state functional MRI scans of typically developing children from birth to 6 years of age, harmoni…
From biorepositories to data repositories: Open-access resources accelerate early R&D and validation of equitable diagnostic tools
Diagnostics are critical tools that guide clinical decision-making for patient care and support disease surveillance. Despite its importance, developers and manufacturers often note that access to specimen panels and essential reagents is one of the key challenges in developing quality diagnostics, particularly in low-resource settings. A recent example, as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded there was a need for clinical samples across the globe to s…
Drawing on the words of others at public hearings: Zoning, Wal-Mart, and the threat to the aquifer
This study examines two public hearings on a zoning proposal that would allow the construction of a Super Wal-Mart Center on a field over the town's aquifer. Many citizens speak out against the zoning change because of the risk to drinking water, as well as other issues. Citizens face the speaker's problem of how to make their presentations convincing, given the technical matters involved and the fact that Town Board members have likely already h…
Poverty: Talk, Identity, and Action
This is a study of poverty as it is constructed in the talk of 11 guests who regularly eat at a soup kitchen in upstate New York. Framed within the perspective that talk constitutes identity and action, this study offers a critical interpretation of how the soup kitchen guests present themselves and the other impoverished guests of the kitchen. The essay also evaluates their characterizations in terms of how they may reflect or influence society'…

The “relevance” of cultural identity in audiences' interpretations of mass media
This article discusses the promise of “relevancy” as a concept for analyzing socially situated meaning processes. It does so through an analysis of how gay male spectators make a “gay discourse” relevant in their interpretations of Harvey Fierstein's teleplay Tidy Endings. The study illustrates how the gay viewers' knowledge of Fierstein's works, oppression, AIDS, and issues of gay identity interact in the construction of meaning. The article dem…
Intersecting and competing discourses in Harvey Fierstein's Tidy endings
This essay illustrates the fallacies of dichotomizing a monolithic ideological, oppressive, dominant discourse and a pluralistic, potentially resistant subcultural discourses. The argument is based upon a case study of gay‐male spectators’ interpretations of Tidy Endings, a teleplay about gay rights. In the case of Tidy Endings, the dominance/resistance metaphor cannot account for the power struggle among multiple discourses within the text and s…
