    There are few places in the world where a man can sail to the foot of his climb. One such place is the southernmost coast of Chile where the glaciers come down into the sea.     Before leaving katmandu in 1949 I asked permission for a party to visit the Annapurna Himal. The Himalayan Committee followed this with a formal application to which a favourable reply came rather late. It was the end of February 1950 before I could begin collecting a party and stores, and with difficulty secure passages for early April.     FROM the mountaineer's point of view nothing is known of the Himalaya east of Chomolhari, and not very much is known of the topography. For 180 miles the range forms the northern boundary of Bhutan, and for another 250 that of Assam; but it should be noted that though the Himalaya may be assumed to mark the Assam-Tibet frontier, the boundary has never been delimited.
