  • An Analysis of the Aspects of Human Security Threat and Implications of International Cooperation in Ukraine After the Outbreak of the Russo‐Ukraine War

    Open Access•Ji‐won Yun•ARTICLE•Pacific Focus•2026

The Russo‐Ukrainian War, which broke out on February 24, 2022, has continued despite diplomatic efforts by the US and Western nations to bring about a ceasefire. Russia has strongly demanded de facto recognition of the Ukrainian territories it occupies as a precondition for ending the war. Meanwhile, Russia's indiscriminate attacks have led to a massive influx of refugees and internally displaced persons in Ukraine, inhumane treatment of prisoner…

  • The Excavation of the Remains of Soldiers Killed in the Korean War

    Open Access•Jiwon Yun, Ji‐won Yun•ARTICLE•Pacific Focus•2024•References: 3

The main purpose of this article is to explore the significance of the objectives by focusing on activity theory, as well as the legal and institutional establishment of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) Agency for KIA Recovery & Identification (MAKRI), the subject of the Korean War remains excavation project, and the implications of expanding the excavation of remains in the DMZ and the repatriation of the remains of US and UN soldiers on t…

  • Prosodic disambiguation of wh -indeterminates in Mandarin Chinese

Open Access•Hongchen Wu, Jiwon Yun et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2023

This study focuses on naturally occurring ambiguous utterances like “Zhōngguóduì shuí yě dǎ-bù-guò” in Mandarin to study if/how prosody is used for disambiguation of wh-indeterminates. The results of our production study suggest that wh-indeterminates are disambiguated prosodically. For the wh-region, interrogative readings are distinguished from indefinite readings by having a longer duration and higher maximum pitch. For the pre-wh region, long…

  • Security Threats and Military Strategic Factors in the Russo–Ukrainian War

    Open Access•Jiwon Yun, Ji‐won Yun•ARTICLE•Pacific Focus•2023•References: 1

The Russo–Ukrainian war has lasted longer than expected due to a combination of two reasons: security threats and military‐strategic conflicts. It turned out that through this conflict, the paradigm of war has changed rapidly enough to be called a game changer. This article aims to provide a theoretical analysis of the main factors in Russia's foreign policy that concern a security threat to the instability of the geopolitical buffer zone and Gre…

  • Processing of the Mandarin polarity item renhe ‘any’

Open Access•Hongchen Wu, Jiwon Yun et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics 語言暨語言學•2021

The Mandarin renhe is similar to the English any in terms of polarity sensitivity ( Wang 1993 ; Wang & Hsieh 1996 ; Kuo 2003 ; Cheng & Giannakidou 2013 ; Shyu 2016 ). However, the following phenomena regarding any in relative clause environments have not been surveyed with respect to renhe: (a) the NPI illusion effect reported in studies like Parker & Phillips ( 2011 ; 2016 ); (b) the subtrigging effect discussed in LeGrand (1975) and Dayal ( 199…

  • The Origin of Territorial Disputes in Northeast Asia and Japanese Perceptions of the Russo‐Japanese War

    Open Access•Ji‐won Yun•ARTICLE•Pacific Focus•2020

A great deal of research confirming not only the history of nationalist formation and subsequent eruption but also the political and diplomatic positions regarding territorial disputes in Northeast Asia has accumulated to date. Mostly, these studies have focused on conflicts in Northeast Asia in terms of diplomacy based on national interest and just cause, economic pressures to secure resources, and historical aspects when analyzing the factors o…

  • Meaning and Prosody of Wh-Indeterminates in Korean

    Jiwon Yun, Ji‐won Yun•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This article presents an experiment investigating the relative contribution of two different prosodic properties to the interpretation and scope configuration of wh-indeterminates in Korean. The experiment shows that it is prosodic phrasing after the wh-indeterminate that determines whether it is interpreted as interrogative or indefinite. Prosodic prominence on the wh-indeterminate does not contribute to such a distinction; rather, it increases …

  • Uncertainty in processing relative clauses across East Asian languages

Open Access•Jiwon Yun, Ji‐won Yun et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Linguistics•2015

The processing difficulty profile for relative clauses in Chinese, Japanese and Korean represents a challenge for theories of human parsing. We address this challenge using a grammar-based complexity metric, one that reflects a minimalist analysis of relative clauses for all three languages as well as structure-dependent corpus distributions. Together, these define a comprehender’s degree of uncertainty at each point in a sentence. We use this id…
