  • Archaeometric analysis of the metal ornamentation of Late Bronze Age vessels and funnel-shaped pendants from the south-western Transdanubia

    Open Access•K Jankovits, Zoltán Szõkefalvi‐Nagy et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2024

Vessels decorated with domed metal discs were extraordinarily rare and valuable commodities of the Late Bronze Age. Pottery adorned with bronze discs and tin first appeared in Hungary during the earlier Urnfield period (14th/13th century BC). A vessel adorned with three ring motifs inlaid with a high-tin alloy on its belly is known from Nagykanizsa-Bilkei-dűlő and a cup decorated with bronze domed discs was recovered from Grave 222 of the Vörs-Ba…

  • Applications of neutron-based and ion beam methods in Cultural Heritage research at the Budapest Neutron Centre

  • Years old Egyptian iron beads made from hammered meteoritic iron

    Open Access•Thilo Rehren, T Belgya et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2013•Cited by: 19•References: 1

The earliest known iron artefacts are nine small beads securely dated to circa 3200 BC, from two burials in Gerzeh, northern Egypt. We show that these beads were made from meteoritic iron, and shaped by careful hammering the metal into thin sheets before rolling them into tubes. The study demonstrates the ability of neutron and X-ray methods to determine the nature of the material even after complete corrosion of the iron metal. The iron beads we…
