  • Weaving the threads of identity

Open Access•Ben Wadham, Lisa Andrewartha et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Higher Education…•2024•References: 4

Research shows that higher education can help veterans build a new sense of identity, purpose and belonging after leaving the military. There are critical gaps, however, in our understanding of student veterans in the Australian context. This article aims to map the experiences of Australian veterans across the student life cycle to improve our understanding of this unique group. We systematically address the higher education stages of pre-access…

  • New data and synthesis of ΔR estimates from the northern Pacific Ocean

    Open Access•B F Khasanov, B Fitzhugh et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

We present new data on regional correction factor (ΔR) conducted for Chukotka, the Commander Islands, and the western Aleutian Islands and summarize data previously published for the other parts of the region. Paired radiocarbon dates of coeval marine and terrestrial materials from the archaeological site Kaniskak were obtained in Chukotka, and one such pair was analyzed from Shemya Island (western Aleutians). Three samples of sea otter ( Enhydra…

  • Do academics and university administrators really know better? The ethics of positioning student perspectives in learning analytics

Open Access•Dixie West, Ann Luzeckyj et al.•ARTICLE•Australasian Journal of…•2020

Increasingly learning analytics (LA) has begun utilising staff- and student-facing dashboards capturing visualisations to present data to support student success and improve learning and teaching. The use of LA is complex, multifaceted and raises many issues for consideration, including ethical and legal challenges, competing stakeholder views and implementation decisions. It is widely acknowledged that LA development requires input from various …

  • Perspectives from the stakeholder

Open Access•Dixie West, Ann Luzeckyj et al.•ARTICLE•Australasian Journal of…•2020

This article reports on a study exploring student perspectives on the collection and use of student data for learning analytics. With data collected via a mixed methods approach from 2,051 students across six Australian universities, it provides critical insights from students as a key stakeholder group. Findings indicate that while students are generally comfortable with the use of data to support their learning, they do have concerns particular…

  • A 7300-yr-old environmental history of seabird, human, and volcano impacts on Carlisle Island (the Islands of Four Mountains, eastern Aleutians, Alaska)

    Open Access•E A Kuzmicheva, O I Smyshlyaeva et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

We present the results of multiproxy study of a peat deposit from Carlisle Island (the Islands of Four Mountains, Aleutians). Vegetation on the initial stage of the peat is characterized by heath vegetation dominated by Ericales indicating cold conditions at 7300–6100 cal yr BP. The appearance of Betula and Alnus is the result of long-distance transportation attributable to strong winds at this time. Sedge-grass (Cyperaceae and Poaceae) communiti…

  • Ancient canids of the Aleutian Islands (new archaeological discoveries from the Islands of Four Mountains)

    Open Access•Dmitry D Vasyukov, О А Крылович et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

We discuss the cultural roles of dog and red fox recovered from Carlisle Island, Islands of Four Mountains, Alaska, within the context of Aleutian ethnographic and zooarchaeological records. Three dog bones were recovered from the Ulyagan archaeological site, Unit 5, in levels that date to AD 1450–1645. Three red fox bones come from the Ulyagan site, Unit 4, in levels that date 460 BC–AD 95. Our analyses show that both red fox and domestic dog da…

  • Hunter-gatherers subsistence and impact on fauna in the Islands of Four Mountains, Eastern Aleutians, Alaska, over 3000 yr

    Open Access•О А Крылович, Olga A Krylovich et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

This first zooarchaeological analysis for the Islands of Four Mountains (IFM), Aleutian Islands, Alaska, provides data about local hunter-gatherer resource exploitation over three thousand yr. The majority of zooarchaeological material represents faunal resources that were harvested within several kilometers of villages. Our analysis shows that IFM subsistence system was shaped by the small size of these islands, which is mostly true for all of t…

  • Human resilience and resettlement among the Islands of Four Mountains, Aleutians, Alaska

    Open Access•Virginia Hatfield, Virginia L Hatfield et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

Combined archaeological, ecological, and geologic research on Chuginadak and Carlisle Islands in the Islands of Four Mountains (IFM) probed questions about the sustainability of human settlements over the past 4000 years in the face of geologic, ecological, and social hazards. We use a human ecodynamics approach to frame the investigation and present original archaeological evidence from this poorly known region of the remote Aleutian Islands. Se…

We compare our ΔR with previous North Pacific marine corrections. Using the ΔR for the eastern Aleutians, we calibrated the radiocarbon dates of 80 human skeletons recovered from village site Chaluka and cave burials at Ship Rock and Kagamil Islands. These buri…

However, findings often reflect an educational culture which is indicative of the institutional or national context where the study has occurred, resulting in bias regarding LA perspectives. Therefore, this study seeks to compare and contrast the experiences of LA among ac…

We confirmed the presence of six tephra layers, including Forty Years (0.3 cal ka BP), T2, YBO (3.3 cal ka BP), Intermediate (6.4 cal ka BP), Main (9.5 cal ka BP), and T6. • Nitrogen Isotope Composition of Peat Samples as a Proxy for Determining Human Colonization of Islands

    Arkady B Savinetsky, B F Khasanov et al.•ARTICLE•Arctic Anthropology•2014

The Aleutian Islands comprise a unique ecosystem, providing nesting grounds and habitat for more than ten million seabirds. No doubt their numbers were even larger prior to the introduction of foxes and rats, invasive species that have shaped the current population sizes and distributions of bird-breeding colonies. Here we present evidence that the peopling of the Aleutian Islands had the same dramatic effect on seabird populations. Analyses of n…

    Gretchen Ennis, Dixie West•ARTICLE•Australian Social Work•2010•Cited by: 24•References: 10

Strengths-based practice appears to be a popular approach to social work practice. Increasingly, it has become the approach of choice in community work, with the "asset-based community development" model being utilised both in Australia and internationally. However, asset-based community development has been criticised for its lack of an evidence base, lack of theoretical depth, and its lack of consideration of the macro level causes of disempowe…
