  • Myth, values, and practice in the representation of Arabic

    John Eisele, John C Eisele•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2003•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Ferguson’s (1959) short article, “Myths About Arabic,” is a seminal article on language attitudes. In its brief expanse, he sketches out a number of ideas whose implications have yet to be coherently developed, whether related to Arabic or to any speech community. In this article I will critically examine some of these ideas and methods and compare them to my own research project on the representation of Arabic East and West, which is directly re…

  • Arabic Verbs in Time: Tense and Aspects in Cairene Arabic

Devin J Stewart, Devin Stewart et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2003

  • The Wild East: Deconstructing the Language of Genre in the Hollywood Eastern

    John C Eisele•ARTICLE•Cinema Journal•2002

This article argues for the existence of a genre of films termed the eastern that deals with the Middle East. Subgenres of the eastern (Arabian nights, sheik, foreign legion, foreign intrigue, and terrorist) vary in the degree of identification allowed the character of the Arab other, reflecting the political-historical context of their development, yet they share a number of narrative tropes that function as unifying attributes of the category a…

  • Parallels in Semitic Linguistics: The Development of Arabic la-and Related Semitic Particles

John C Eisele, David Testen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2001

This linguistic study is concerned with the role of the emphasizing particle la- (known as lam al-ta'kid) in the grammatical traditions of Classical Arabic, as well as with the question of the historical relationship connecting this particle to a set of elements in several other Semitic languages showing comparable forms and functions. Although these particles have hitherto seemed to defy a coherent reconstruction, the very complexity of the data…

  • On the Description and Representation of Arabic

    John C Eisele•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•1997

In Modern Arabic, Clive Holes suceeds in detailing present-day Arabic in all of its variety. Yet, in drawing conclusions regarding several important points, he fails to consider fully and objectively some of the data he himself presents in the study, due partly to his uncritical acceptance of certain widely-held but often unexpressed notions about Arabic. This-together with occasional lapses in the data itself-ultimately undermines the premise of…

  • Artificial Punning in the Egyptian Arabic Ballad: A Reinterpretation of Structuralist Poetics

    John C Eisele•ARTICLE•Language•1997•Cited by: 2

This article presents a linguistic analysis of a specific feature of a literary genre: the artificial punning found in the Egyptian Arabic narrative ballad (as described in Cachia 1989). A comparison of how these puns differ from regular processes in the phonology and morphology of the language reveals that this encoding by the poet-performer is very much a mirror image of regular processes. The audience's decoding of them, therefore, follows a p…
