Voicing is Not Relevant for Sonority
Proceedings of the Seventeenth Annual Meeting of the Berkeley Linguistics Society: General Session and Parasession on The Grammar of Event Structure (1991), pp. 69-80
Diglossia in Korean language and literature
Variation and change in optimality theory
This paper puts forward an optimality-theoretic explanation for the structure-dependence of synchronic variation and diachronic change. The approach is illustrated by modelling two well-documented phonological changes in detail. The model combines invariant regularities, variable regularities and statistical preferences in a seamless fashion by means of partially ordered constraint sets. Diachronic change is visualized in terms of grammar lattice…
A lexical account of inflectional suffixes in Korean
Rule Ordering, and Constraint Interaction in OT

Morphological and universal devoicing in English and Swedish
The Phonology and Phonetics of ‘Voiceless’ Vowels
Proceedings of the Nineteenth Annual Meeting of the Berkeley Linguistics Society: General Session and Parasession on Semantic Typology and Semantic Universals (1993)
Inalterability as Prespecification
‘Geminate inalterability’ is the well-known phenomenon whereby a rule affecting singleton segments fails to alter comparable geminates. Past accounts have attributed inalterability to geminate-specific constraints on rule application. Two new generalizations point in a radically different direction. First, rules respecting inalterability are purely structure-filling (never structure-changing). Second, inalterability occurs also among singletons. …
