  • К семантике и типологии аквизитивной модальности: Шведское orka и его синонимы на фоне русского языка

Open Access•Vladimir Plungian, Karine Åkerman Sarkisian•ARTICLE•Scando-Slavica•2023

The so-called acquisitive modality or actuality, describing a successful realization of an action, is a largely understudied type of modal values. It is of significant interest both from the viewpoint of its grammaticalization paths and of a wide and rich variety of its lexical expression. The article discusses one of the main representatives of this lexical class in Swedish, the hard-to-translate verb orka, and its various counterparts in a Swed…

  • Perfective, performative and present: Some non-standard combinations in Slavic and beyond

Open Access•Vladimir Plungian, Ekaterina Rakhilina et al.•ARTICLE•Russian Journal of Linguistics•2022

The combination of perfective aspect and present tense is frequently considered as an example of semantically incompatible grams. If verbal forms including markers of both perfective aspect and present tense do exist in a language, they tend not to express present resp. perfective in the strict sense. Thus, in Russian such forms usually convey the future, as in napishu ‘I will write’. The article discusses a specific type of contexts where these …

  • Passive in Western Mansi

Open Access•Анна Юрьевна Урманчиева, Vladimir Plungian•ARTICLE•Tomsk Journal of Linguistics and…•2021

Данная работа открывает серию статей, в которых проводится сопоставительное изучение употребления пассивных форм в диалектах мансийского языка. В мансийском языке (обско-угорские угорские уральские) выделяется несколько диалектных групп: северная (по рекам Сосьва, Ляпин и по верхнему течению р. Лозьва), южная (по р. Тавда), восточная (по р. Конда) и западная (по рекам Пелым и Вагиль и по реке Лозьва в ее среднем и нижнем течении). Южные и западны…

  • The Perfect in Old Church Slavonic: Was It Resultative

Open Access•Vladimir Plungian, Anna Yu Urmanchieva•ARTICLE•Slovene•2017

Periphrastic perfect is a notoriously difficult form of Old Church Slavonic (OCS) verbs, because it remains consistently resistant to any coherent semantic description. While the majority of OCS texts are (very literal) translations, readily calquing both lexical and grammatical features of Hellenistic Greek, the OCS perfect is almost unique in deviating drastically from this common trend. The present paper attempts to tackle the semantic puzzle …

    Open Access•Vladimir Plungian, Ekaterina Rakhilina•ARTICLE•Russian Linguistics•2013

  • Russian morphophonemics in a nutshell: The verb vstat’ ‘stand up’

    Open Access•Anna Endresen, Vladimir Plungian•ARTICLE•Poljarnyj vestnik•2012

This paper argues against a number of accounts found in dictionaries of Russian word-formation and shows that the verb vstat' ‘stand up' (1) even synchronically is derived from stat' ‘become' and (2) is formed via the prefix vz- rather than v-. We provide semantic, historical, morphophonemic, and typological arguments in favor of this analysis. We argue that the verb vstat' is morphologically complex, but not fully analyzable due to a lack of for…
