Eighteenth-Century Day Excursions
This article argues that a focus on the day excursion as a particular form of journey, with its inherent limits in relation to scale, distance, and duration, enables us to bring recent critical thinking on microtravel as a form with “foundations in the depth or intensity of description” into dialogue with scholarship that has given sustained attention to modes of descriptive practice that were specific to eighteenth-century British literature and…
Europe in British Literature and Culture
How has Europe shaped British literature and culture – and vice versa – since the Middle Ages? This volume offers nuanced answers to this question. From the High Renaissance to haute cuisine, from the Republic of Letters to the European Union, from the Black Death to Brexit -- the reader gains insights into the main geographical zones of influence, shared intellectual movements, indicative modes of cultural transfer and more recent conflicts that…
Vertical travel
This introduction outlines the background of our special issue of Studies in Travel Writing, which emerged from reflections on travel and the travelogue in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. It details the impact of this global public health crisis on questions of mobility and foregrounds the confinement to which travellers have been subject. The introduction argues that such changes should not be confined to the hypercontemporary moment but n…

The large set of thirty-five volumes presents an important collection of press cuttings relating to the history and consequences of the French Revolution, and also contains ‘historical and miscellaneous’ material of a more eclectic nature. I argue that the texts significantly improve our unders…
